The Renaissance Club, situated between Muirfield and Archerfield in East Lothian opened for play in April 2008, and despite the price tag and its exclusivity, is a welcoming and special place. As golfing experiences go, it offers a level of opulence that is hard to find elsewhere, with all the luxury of a 5* resort, and a top-flight golf course to accompany it.

Having hosted 3 of the 4 previous Scottish Opens, Renaissance (unsurprisingly) feels like a Championship course when you pay it. Brutal for the amateur, but testing for the professional, and whilst it is long, and offers intimidation off the tee, it’s the greens that are the biggest challenge. Hugely contoured, with wild run-offs, it’s challenging enough hitting the putting surface from afar, but holding it is even tougher. With beautiful swales and contours around the green Renaissance will test every aspect of your game.

Despite it being a fairly recent addition to the East Lothian coastline, Renaissance does not feel young when you play it. A landscape in keeping with its environment, and a clubhouse fit for a king. There are few more memorable days in golf, than a day sent at The Renaissance Club.
