The 2019 Lexus UX Hybrid pairs a 4-cylinder engine with a pair of hybrid motors to provide all-wheel drive. But the vehicle’s lack of power, and disappointing fit and finish will leave the typical Lexus shopper unimpressed.
As a luxury subcompact crossover, the Lexus competes directly against the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, the BMW X1, the Audi Q3, and the Infiniti QX30. But its hybrid powertrain bests the field with nearly 40 miles per gallon in combined driving. That said, the inline 4-cylinder engine, paired with two hybrid motors on the rear axle for 181 net system horsepower, is not quick to pass on freeways.
Inside, the Lexus UX Hybrid forgoes leather upholstery for Lexus’ SoTex material. The synthetic upholstery traps sweat, but the seats are comfortable and soft. Rear seat room is cramped, and the lack of rear dark-tinted glass can make rear-seat passengers uncomfortable. Adding to the disappointment is a limited 17.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seat.
Thankfully, Apply CarPlay is available on the stylish infotainment screen, but Android Auto is not offered, and the system relies heavily on Lexus’ clunky Remote Touch Interface, rather than using a traditional touchscreen. The car’s advanced safety technology, however, puts it near the front of the competitive field. Lexus Safety System 2.0 comes as standard equipment and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and a road-sign recognition system (among other features).
Overall, the Lexus UX Hybrid impresses in regards to safety, but falls short in terms of luxury and performance. For more information, read Chris’ full review on CarGurus:
