Maria explains that hitting chunky pitches and chips can really be from one of 3 things, and addresses each of these in the video. These are:
1) You might not have enough weight forward. Maria recommends 60-80% of your weight on your front foot (depending on the chip shot). If you do not have your weight properly forward, you could be catching the chip fat.
2) You might be “casting” and releasing the club head too early. If your clubhead gets to the ball before your hands, this causes chunky shots. Practice leading with your hands forward, leaving the clubhead behind them to ensure you are hitting down on the chips.
3) The last thing Maria explains is you could be digging your wedges in if you are bringing the club too far to the inside on your back swing. She demonstrates how you should bring the club back to ensure you don’t chunk it.
