There are two basic putting alignment techniques, static alignment and dynamic alignment.
Static alignment is a popular technique used on all professional tours, and it features aiming the putter first before building a stance. While players can putt well using static alignment, this technique is vulnerable to independent motion in one of the three segments; hands, arms, or torso, which can destroy alignment of the putter face during a stroke.
Notice how players using static alignment are very careful when addressing the ball, because any slight motion in one of the segments can ruin the alignment. This is evidence of instability of this type of alignment technique.
Dynamic pre-shot alignment is a comprehensive technique to stabilize motion in the joints so that all three major segments are synchronized to work as a single assemblage during a stroke. One of the segments cannot overpower another segment and destroy alignment.
Two major advantages of dynamic alignment are stability in start line, and an ability to focus solely on distance control during a stroke, rather than trying to focus on both start line and distance control at the same time.
