In today’s rules video, golf professional Sam Mindlin is discussing the proper procedure for rule 18.2 when the ball cannot be found within the allotted 3 minutes that are allowed. The key factor here is that if there is a ball that is hit, and everyone in your group agrees on the general area of where the ball landed, if you or any member of your group cannot find the ball within three minutes of starting the search, the ball is deemed to be a lost ball. The penalty is one shot and you must take what is called stroke-and-distance by hitting from your last spot. A recommendation for this scenario is that if you hit a shot to an area where there is a reasonable chance you cannot find it, be sure to hit a provisional ball to help with the pace of play.
