In this rules video, Head PGA Professional of Spruce Creek Golf and Country Club Mike Kelly, explains a common misconception about when taking relief from a red penalty area. In rule 17.1, relief must be taken where the ball last enters the penalty area. If the ball never crosses the line of the penalty area, then relief must be taken with the addition of one shot, from the spot where the ball crossed either the red line or between the red stakes. The player also has the option of taking stroke and distance similar to a ball being deemed out of bounds.
