Good players hit the ball first and then the grass. Bad players hit first the grass and then the ball or the only hit the ball without grass.
To achieve a solid and consistent impact the attack angle must be slightly downward and the divot must be shallow and be forward the ball.
A good movement of the lower part of the body when beginning the downswing, coming from inside and maintaining the wrists’ angle facilitates make the divot ahead of the ball.
Let’s see some exercises to achieve it.
Towel. Place a towel behind the ball. Hit the ball without touching the towel.
Pass the line. Mark in the ground with a tee a perpendicular line to the objective line. Place the club in the line. Make practice swings or hit balls making the divot forward of the line.
Pass between the balls. Place two balls in a distance slightly longer than the head of the club. Place the club between the balls. Make swings or hit balls making the divot forward of the balls.
Nail the tee. Place a tee forward of the ball inclined to it. Hit the ball and take out the tee.
Cut off the head of the tee. Place the ball on a tee in the normal way for a shot with iron. Hit the ball and move or cut off the head to the tee.
