From the Beginner’s Guide to Golf. The No. 4, the No. 5, and the No. 6 irons are the medium irons. They are easy to use, so easy and useful, in fact, that they may be said to get the brunt of the average golfer’s play.

They are intended for fairly good distance – the No. 4 is designed for around 160 yards – and they have enough loft that they can be used for all but the poorest lies. Not only are they used for shots of from 140 to 160 yards, but they are favorites for chipping to the green from just a short way out.
