Winchester Golf Club 15th hole battle

Winchester Golf Club

Daily golf tips

In this episode of Cobe Life on the course, Oliver and I battle it out on the 15th Hole at Winchester Golf Club. Winchester Golf club might very well be the best golf club in the greater Toronto area for average golfers to play competitively. An average golfer to me is someone around an 18 to 26 Handicap. Winchester works out perfect from the Whites for men in that Range, or from the Reds for women. It isn’t exceptionally long, and has a number of Risk/Reward holes. It also has a few Par 4s that average length hitters can reach with the Driver.

The 15th Hole at Winchester golf club isn’t a Hole you can take lightly. You have to be careful off the Tee. Hit it too long and you will end up in a pond. Thin it and there’s a marsh just in front of the Tee box that can catch your ball. The approach shot is no picnic either. No matter where you land with your Tee shot, you have to hit over a pond to a Green that’s very narrow front to back. Fortunately the back of the Green is backstopped by a steep slope, so if you go long you won’t lose your ball.

What I really want to stress to Beginners who are looking to improve with this video is the importance of playing competitively. If every time you play a Round of golf with friends it’s just for fun. Then you are limiting the kind of shots you could likely improve upon in key situations. Standing on the Tee box of the 15th Hole down by 5 strokes forced me to change my strategy. The safe play is Hybrid for me which would leave me with a 7 Iron into the Green. My accuracy with the 7 Iron isn’t great but It’s a high percentage strategy. I can’t reach the Pond with my Hybrids, and I strike them particularly well off the Tee. I hit my 7 Iron quite high so even with a small Green, I don’t worry too much about running too far out the back. In this situation down by 5 strokes I chose a far more aggressive play. I went with Driver off the Tee. I didn’t swing full out because I didn’t want to risk the Pond. My goal was to get to within Wedge distance. I am far more confident going after a Pin with my Pitching Wedge. Instead of playing for Par, my goal was to Birdie this Hole. If it wasn’t for the competitive way we play I would have never attempted this. It’s these situations that truly allow us to determine what we are capable of out on the course.
