MADISON, Wis. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men’s golf team is set to compete in their third tournament in as many weeks as they compete at the Badger Invitational starting on Sunday at University Ridge.
The three-day tournament will be a 54-hole event that will feature 18 holes on each day. The first group tees off at 9 a.m. on Sunday and Monday with the final round on Tuesday with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.
University Ridge plays 7,259 yards and is a par 72.
The Competition
Along with UTRGV and Wisconsin, other schools competing include Ball State, Butler, Drake, Illinois state, Kansas, Miami (OH), Rutgers, USC Upstate, Western Carolina and William & Mary.
Last Time Out
The Vaqueros held on to finish in second place at the HBU Husky Intercollegiate. They held off Florida Atlantic and tournament host Houston Baptist by two strokes for second.
Andres Gonzalez led the way with a fourth place finish after posting a three-round score of 214. He posted rounds of 74, 65 and 75 with his second round score tying the program record for the lowest single round.
Senior Ramon Ventura-Camp posed a 14th place finish with a three-round score of 214. Ventura-Camp posted an even par 71 in the final round of the tournament. Pedro Lamadrid finished one stroke behind Ventura-Camp with a three-round score of 220. Lamadrid turned in his best round of the tournament with a second round four-under 67.
Nicolas Platret finished tied for 35th with a three-round score of 230 while Ali Khazanbeik finished fied for 37th with a three-round score of 234.
Last Year at the Badger Invitational
The Vaqueros did not compete in the Badger Invitational last year. Sam Houston State won the team championship last year after posting a three-round score of 871 while tournament host Wisconsin finished in sixth. Marquette finished in fifth and Toledo finished in fourth.
International Flavor
The Vaqueros have 10 student-athletes representing five different countries including the United States, Spain, Mexico, France and Germany. Two of the student-athletes, seniors Ricky Solis and Peter Fox, call the Rio Grande Valley home.
Next Up
The Vaqueros will have some time off before they are back on the course for the Herb Wimberly Invitational on October 19 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
