Pre Shot Routine Purpose – to block out the background noise and become completely focused on the task at hand. When done correctly, it can banish all those excess emotions, like fear and doubt. The pre shot routine might seem menial but it is the road to mental strength, focus, precision and confidence. To improve the consistency and effect of your pre shot routine, commit to completing it during practice sessions to get comfortable and efficient with your process.
1. How does the pre shot routine strengthen your mental game?
Channels your focus on the process instead of worrying about the results, gives your mind a specific task to perform which improves focus. Through commitment, consistency and repetition it creates confidence because you feel more comfortable and prepared for your shot. Feeling prepared builds confidence and confidence leads to great improvement and more enjoyment.
2. How does the pre shot routine help your golf game?
Creates consistency through a repetitive task, it trains your brain to be ready to perform, it aligns you towards your target, it helps train your muscles to perform a certain movement, it gives you a chance to double check your setup and posture,
3. What is involved in the pre shot process?
Everyone’s pre shot routine is different but they should include, aim and alignment, visualization, a practice swing of some sort, commitment, and possibly a trigger. This process should take around 10-20 seconds. Be careful not to make it a long process as you could lose focus and irritate your playing partners.
4. Final Thoughts
Be patient with yourself while you implement this new process. Once you determine your pre shot routine commit to it with resilience. Its like flossing, we just commit to doing it everyday, regardless of how you are feeling. We might not see the benefits but we know it’s helping. With commitment, it will soon become a natural part of your swing process.
We must incorporate a consistent pre shot routine for every golf shot to experience the positive results, just like flossing.
Remember that the pre shot routine is your own preparation time. It’s what sets you up for success. Instead of hoping for a good shot or to hit it in the right direction, take a few extra seconds to set yourself up to for success.
