We’re reviewing the four different types of Lob Serves in Racquetball. The second is the a Half-Lob. This serve is extremely effective if you’re playing somebody and they’re able to cut off your Straight-In Lob. This ball is hard to cut-off since you’re going to drop the ball about 8 inches inside the dotted line, which makes it tough to hit.

When you hit a Half-Lob, it’s going to go all the way to the back wall. It’s going to hit the side wall about a foot or two from the back wall and then die into the back wall.

To hit a Half-Lob, you’ll want to position yourself like you did for the Straight-In Lob. For this one, you’re going to bend your knees a bit and you’re going to crouch slightly. You’re going to bounce the ball harder and you want to hit it a bit more flat than you did for the Straight-In Lob. The angle will be flatter and the ball will come back the player quicker.

You’re going to hit the ball on the front wall, about 10 to 12 feet, depending on how hard you hit it. The higher you hit a Half-Lob, the softer you’re going to want to hit it. The lower you hit it, you’re going to want to put a little more pace on it. The idea is to vary the pace on this serve so your opponent doesn’t get used to it.
