Wolves killed a dog at an abandoned former golf course site in Ucluelet on Tuesday, April 7.

The BC Conservation Officer Service issued a statement on Tuesday announcing the dog’s death and warning residents about increased wolf activity at the Wyndansea property on the outskirts of town that’s become a popular spot for residents to take their dogs since a golf course and resort project slated for the area was abandoned over a decade ago.

“Earlier today, an off-leash dog was lured by wolves in a well-used walking area and killed. This incident highlights the real and immediate risk to pets, and potential safety concerns for the public,” the COS statement reads. “The BCCOS will be in the area, working with local officials, including the District of Ucluelet and RCMP, to investigate this incident.”

The statement warns dog owners from walking their pets in the Wyndansea area and to keep their dogs leashed at all times. It adds that dogs should be walked in well-travelled paths and owners should remain alert and not let their pets roam freely.

“Wolves are intelligent predators and may use tactics such as luring domestic animals. They can travel large distances in search of prey and typically avoid urban environments, but this behaviour can change,” the statement adds. “Report aggressive or concerning wildlife behaviour to the BC Conservation Officer Service #RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277. Your awareness and caution can help prevent further incidents.”

Wolf activity has been on the rise in the region this year with nearby Pacific Rim National Park Reserve announcing a temporary dog ban within its borders after two wolves attacked a dog in the Willowbrae Trail in February.
