I hit one beautiful bomb down the middle about 280 carry with my boys my first time ever golfing on a course. Mind you that was my one good shot out of probably 80 haha. I’ve only been golfing for about 2 weeks and I was hitting my driver decent at first, but now watching all these videos with hand placement, and trying to not hit downward, I can’t hit a ball to save my life.

Two questions,

I feel like I’m too close to the ball but if I scoot back, I feel like I won’t be able to reach the ball at all. Do I need a longer shaft?

Second you can diagnose my swing and general and give me 1 or 2 drills that you think would help me most if you want, I appreciate it!

Also I’m a major slicer too but I’m great with my irons no slicing at all. I’ve attached all the videos I’ve filmed

I’m sure your shaft is long enough

  2. 46 is the max length, you probably won’t find much difference if your current was built in the last 15 years

    I’d say you’re a little close

  3. ScoresAndScores

Definitely too close to the ball. Sure, a longer shaft could help, but there’s more to figure out than that.

  4. Fair_Foundation_846

Nah man you have to learn how to use are limbs all over again!

Being tall doesn’t always correlate with needing a longer set of shafts. It has to do with how high your hands are from the ground and torso/leg length ratio. I.e. if you are tall but have long arms, you may need *shorter* shafts.

In any event, the most important part is to keep practicing and find a swing rhythm. You should be able to manage practice (choke down on the grips) with mis-fitted clubs.

No, a standard length driver shaft should fit you just fine. I think most people should actually have an inch or so taken off their driver. I’m 6’6″ for reference and use a standard driver length. But my irons are 1.25″ extended

  7. themindisaweapon

I’m the same height and my driver length is standard. Really depends on the distance of your hands to the ground.

  8. toothbrush81

Tony Finau is 6’4”, and uses a 45.25”.

Yes, you’re standing pretty close to the ball. It may feel far when you try, but it’s worth attempting what feel extreme, in golf practice. Feel vs real are two different things.

  9. Vault_Boof

I’m also a 6’5″ golfer. Stock driver shafts are usually to long in general. (every year or two driver companies make their shafts like .25in longer, cause longer shafts equal more distance) DM me if you got any golf questions and maybe I can help

No. Maybe get some lessons. Tall guys have a distinct advantage with swing speed. You need to find a coach who can help you take that advantage.

  11. Interchangeable-name

You would probably do better to get fit for a driver. You may need a different lie angle as opposed to a longer shaft.

Longer shafts are hards to control.

People who are significantly taller or shorter than average height will need either a steeper or shallower lie angle (the angle your club sits at ball address.

  12. AftyOfTheUK

Unlikely, most pros play shafts significantly shorter than the regular length amateurs buy them at, and for good reason, too

  13. Pleasant_Glove_1696

No. Your stance needs to be completely overhauled. Too close to the ball, ass too far back, not enough pelvis tilt, and shoulders too hunched.

You can always go shorter or longer (up to 46″). Not like your 9i is 46″ though…

  14. amianonymous16

Actually, I think that shaft length is too long. Maybe cut it down an inch or two. ~ Tony Finau

  15. BlueGolfball

    I’m 6’4″ and use a 45″ driver shaft(standard size).

You need to pull in that dump truck and extend your arms away from your body a bit more.

  16. TeeTimeAllTheTime

Maybe? Do you hit it well or feel uncomfortable? If you’re uncomfortable can’t hurt to try. If you hit bombs down the fairway just stick with it. You should check out Tony Finau’s swing I think he is at least 6 foot 5

  17. crate-the-249

I have a buddy whose. 6’5 and got fitted and they said he didn’t need a longer driver…irons etc yes

  18. shid3ater

Maybe with irons and wedges but not with driver

  19. AngryKhakis

Makes sense that you’re slicing it, you’re too close to the ball and you’re using your legs very little. Golf swing should be primarily driven by your legs. A good drill is more of an exercise where you do a kettlebell swing like you would swing a golf club, if you use just arms you’re not gonna move it very efficiently. You can start with your feet close together and add a step back to further drive the feeling you’re looking for

  20. Dull-Woodpecker3900

Until you setup properly I’d wait to do a fitting. You’re too bent over, and too close to the ball. At 6’5 you might need half an inch at most longer because your arms are quite long.

  21. fillingupthecorners

The other guys are right that you’re too crowded/close to the ball, easy fix. But you definitely could do with a longer driver eventually. For now a shorter driver will just be easier to learn on.

Every swing change is gonna feel weird unfortunately, lol. Pound a few buckets and it’ll be integrated.

  22. Equivalent_Hope_9886

at 6’5” ur shaft is probably long enough.

  23. SnooChipmunks9598

One thing that helped me get the right distance in my stance is to let go with one of your hands and let it dangle. If you’re in the right spot it shouldn’t move forward or backward from the shaft, you
Should be able to grab right back where you were. If your hand swings in front or behind adjust your distance.

  24. Corndawgptang

Find your swing before you go looking at new clubs my guy

  25. Efferdent_FTW

What’s your wrist to floor measurement? Tall with a huge wingspan may not necessitate longer shafts

  26. Rich-Turtle

My buddy is 6,5 and he has an inch and a half to all his clubs, that’s how he got fit for them.

  27. FrankieColombino

There are quite a few advantage to being “too tall” for your driver. Imo a standard driver length is too long for people with average height. Ultimately its wroth it to test one out that’s longer and if its more comfortable to setup with, go for it.

  28. bigtome2120

Im 6’5” and no, probably not. Just a different set up/swing

  29. thesenate92

Depends on your wrist to ground measurement more than your actual height. But being 6’5 myself I have my wedges and irons up till the 4 iron extended 1.5 inches. 3 iron and all my woods and driver are standard length and are more than enough. Currently your setup to the ball looks a little wonky so work on that.

  30. lifelongfearofbread

I am 6’ 7” and had a Cobra Long Tom driver for years. Last year I went to a standard length Driver and I’ve lost maybe 10 yards but I hit wayyyy more fairways. I think of it like a semi-mini driver for a guy my height.

I have custom +1.5” clubs for all my irons, but my fairways, woods and driver are all standard length. They are already long and hard enough to strike, to quote my local fitter.

Lessons would go a lot farther than a longer driver at this point.

  31. 31nigrhcdrh

Get them cheeks into that swing

    Heeeeyahhh

  32. Potential-Instance99

No sir. Im 6’6 and my driver/woods all have regular shafts. My irons and wedges are extended though.

  33. ZachDigital

hey dude, I’m 6’4″ so i get it, but you can extend your arms out more

but if you do down the line think about getting clubs my driver, woods and hybrid are completely stock lengths though.

Focus more on type of shaft (Stiff, xtra stiff, regular etc) I like regular because i dont swing like a pro (over 105MPH swing speed)

I am however fitted for irons, mine extended about 3/4 of an inch for comfort but yours will vary on your swing style etc.

  34. themikegman

Go get a lesson, a good teacher will get you in the right posture for your height.
