STANFORD, Calif. – Grand Canyon men’s golf finished its northwest trip at The Goodwin at Stanford Golf Course Saturday, placing 23rd out of 30 schools in a stacked field that included eight top 50 nationally ranked teams.
GCU carded a 23 overall score with an 8 over final round and shot 7 over/8 over/8 over for the week that began Thursday.
Host school and No. 23 Stanford took home first at 17 under, followed by No. 35 UCLA and No. 21 New Mexico.
Sophomore Gavin O’Neill stayed fairly consistent throughout the tournament, finishing 37th out of 160 golfers with a 1 over total. O’Neill shot 1 over Saturday with four birdies, three which came in a row on the back nine. He tallied 11 birdies overall for the tournament.
Sophomore Matthew Diehl moved up again after jumping 47 spots from day one to day two and climbed six spots with a 1 over final round. Diehl shot 5 over for a 66th placement. He ended with 38 pars over three days, tied for fourth among all players.
Classmate Måns Boje finished two shots back of Diehl and placed 78th at 7 over. Boje’s three birdies in his third round moved him to 11 overall, tied with O’Neill for a team high.
Sophomore Nixon Lauritzen shot 15 over while freshman Daniel Nilsson shot 17 over in total, finishing 134th and 143rd, respectively.
GCU has one more quick turnaround with the two-day Cowboy Classic beginning Tuesday, March 31 at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes in Maricopa. It will be the second consecutive tournament with at least 25 teams competing.
