While the weather is not a golfers’ paradise, Michigan is still consistently ranked as one of the top golfing destinations in the country.
As of 2026, it holds the title for the most publicly accessible golf courses in the United States with 748 available to the public.
With so many great courses it’s no surprise that Michigan’s best golf course has been named as one of the best of the country.
The Fortress Golf Course in Frankenmuth has earned the #1 spot among Michigan’s public golf courses and 41st nationally in the GolfPass Golfers’ Choice 2026 rankings.
In a statement, Nick Shelton, president of Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth talked about The Fortress receiving such great recognition:

I’m a terrible golfer myself, but wanted to see how much it would cost to play a round of golf at Michigan’s best public course.
I went online and started looking around at possible tee times and found that for a typical weekday tee time of 18 holes includes green fees and cart you can play for around $70, if you want to play 9 holes it will be $50.
I was surprised that for a course that nice it wasn’t more money.
