Most golfers misunderstand what Bryson DeChambeau is actually doing in the release.

It’s not just about “rolling the wrists” or trying to square the club face late… and if you get this wrong, you’ll struggle with inconsistent strikes, poor face control, and a real lack of speed.

In this video, I break down Bryson’s release move and explain what’s really happening — in a way that’s simple and easy to apply to your own swing.

I’ve been teaching this concept for years, and when golfers understand it properly, they start to:

Square the club face far more consistently

Strike the ball cleaner

Generate more effortless speed

Hit longer, more controlled shots

I’ll show you exactly how to apply it, so you can stop manipulating the clubface and start letting it release naturally through impact.

If you’ve ever struggled with:

An open or inconsistent clubface

Slicing or weak shots

Lack of speed or compression

…this will really help you.

  1. Good stuff, you do cover this at the end a little but a lot of people have issues standing up too early without the dip. Or will lean back with the post too. Sequencing this is going to be so difficult for a amateur.

  2. Chris, great instruction.
Staying with passiv hands in downswing, you can really feel the snap effect/deceleration while push up your lead leg.
Also the release gets so much easier by maintaining the 'seven' shape between your lead shoulder and lead arm for as long as possible.

  3. I've noticed with Hovland and Knapp in particular, that their hands are very low at release. For me it feels like my left arm is much more horizontal to the ground and the release is more like a horizontal threshing / axe cutting a tree action. It's helping cure my hook as my swing path is cutting across the ball more rather than pushing in to out. It also helps to get more force and body weight down into the ground

  4. I get it but I've spent way too much time trying to get my body to keep moving and stop flipping. If I think about breaking to let the club release past me I'm screwed.

  5. Bryson is just basically saying let the club overtake the hands and release it at the target. So many people trying to hold off the club these days because they've watching videos on getting hips open at impact etc

  6. The force has to be sent down plane not towards the target. The design of the club will square the face If you understand that. Force moves away from center. Support the on plane swinging force.

  7. This is 100% correct. It looks off because in slow motion we don't have the side tilt but in full speed the head stays back and once the lead leg starts straightening the weight of the club head takes the arms along like a sling and if we maintain the tilt we will see a tour level release. It's actually very difficult not to release in full speed if the brake is applied.

  8. Feel is so interesting. Bryson feels like he is letting the club head pass his hands at impact, but on slow motion video he has a massive bow with incredible forward shaft lean. The problem with this feeling for the average golfer is they will scoop at impact.

  9. How do I distinguish this from the classic over the top stand up mechanics? That's where I started, and I've reworked the swing to a much better place but I worked so hard not to "stand up" how do I add this back in correctly? Because I feel like I've got most of the swing working correctly except the square up and I am leaving the face open on my faster driver swings. I think this is the solution.

  10. Next week we will be back on getting people to stop flipping and standing up out of posture early LOLOLOL

  11. Great video as always, you didn't talk much about the stop element and it also seems like you dont have as much stop in your swing, even you have plenty of distance and square club face

  12. There's an earlier video of BD and Martin Borgmeier on the range where Bryson discovers this new release. He "learned how to throw the club" he says. It's basically him releasing the club at around his trail hip with a flick of the trail hand wrist like skipping a rock.

  13. Hi Chris. This is probably the video I've been looking for. I'm looking to create a bit more speed with my clubs. Question does this apply to drivers as well?

  14. This feels extremely misleading, especially when shown with an iron that is teed up as a driver.

Doesn’t this technique make you hit up on the ball, as you would with driver and woods? Not trying to hate, I’m genuinely curious since this the opposite of what I’ve ever heard regarding hitting irons.

  15. and 2plus 3 is 72. It something called centrifugal force. raising that club and the added club travel is directly proportional to the distance you raised the club. If that works for someone (a pro) great but the average golfer you lost in the first thirty seconds.
