Came across this guy on Hole 14 at Rustic Canyon. Buddy hit one off the tee that hopped over the cart path on the right, so we drove up and were both looking right. Said he saw it so I went to step out of the cart and this guy was coiled and rattling at me.

That’s a big one.
Always look where you are walking this time of year
I used to work at rustic years and years ago. One of my duties in the morning was to clear the rattle stakes warming themselves on the greens.
That would be my last round of golf.
No thanks
Danger noodle
I would be losing a lot of balls anywhere near the rough the rest of the day!
I saw the biggest motherfing rattlesnake I’ve ever seen there. There’s a shortish par 4 on the back 9 where the hole doglegs and there is a lone tree. I forget the number.
Anyway, the guy I was playing with hit his ball under the tree and when we went over to it there was a rattler the size of a freakin anaconda just chilling under the tree.
We left the ball.
That’s a big ole nope rope
Southern Pacific Rattlesnake, Crotalus helleri, I believe but wait for an RR.
Wait what subreddit is this?
Grab its rattle and twist it!!!!!
Jk jk(for liability purposes)
He’s a healthy one.
Leave him alone and he will do the same. He doesn’t want any part of humans.
How many three-putts did you have there? Those greens are diabolical. Borderline unfun.
That looks like 14?
I play a tournament a couple months back with a couple in my group that were a +2 and +4 the pin placement was diabolical and there were multiple 4 putts.
first rule of rustic is you don’t post about rustic
Did you see any road runners? I love seeing them, they usually hang around hole 12 and 13.
sounds like a fancy golf store
Looking for a ball at Tierra Rajeda #10, I heard one issue a warning.
One of my favorite courses. It’s 2 hour drive for me. After these comments I ain’t playing there anymore. I’ve searched for my ball in the bushes there.
The old Nope Rope
Had a big one at Wood Ranch this week too
We used to encounter rattlesnakes all the time at Marine Memorial on Camp Pendleton.
They were mostly the more docile Southern Pacific Rattler and not the more aggressive Western Diamondbacks, thankfully. They would mostly keep to themselves unless you got too close to their offspring.
The babies were what you had to watch out for because they loved to nest in the thick rough near shade and trees, making them hard to see, especially if you were weed whacking. I nearly stepped on a nest of babies once and it would have been the end of me. They have much more potent venom and don’t have venom control and a bite can kill you in 15 minutes.
My boss used to say, don’t get bit by a baby rattler because the ambulance is 20 minutes away.
14 is a tough hole from the blue tees. I love playing there now, I had my first birdie there a few years ago when I was a new golfer. The first time I played there was in 2021 and I lost 10 balls.
