My dad played a lot of golf in his younger days, but slowed a lot as he got older. He’s starting to play again on occasion and I saw his bag sitting in the garage this weekend. He has a driver, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 12 woods… a hybrid and a couple irons to round out the bag, but the 12 wood absolutely baffled me. I know 7 and 9 woods are all the rage these days, but who’s venturing into 12 wood territory?

Highly lofted woods were semi-popular in the hickory and early steel eras. People would use them to get the ball in the air from a poor lie, as it can be challenging to get the old irons to do anything but a line drive sometimes. Although this particular one, I mean that’s a pitching wedge lol

Found an old Jack Nicklaus 11 wood (30 degrees loft).
I use it when I can’t get anything going with my longer irons (which is frequent haha).

Haven’t seen a 12 wood yet but feels like I’d buy one just to try out.

I’ve seen several callaway 11 woods in recent years . Elyte series and AiSmoke. I play a Taylor Made 24.5 Degree QI35 max 9 wood and I love it. It’s my 180-185 club. Drops in soooo high and soft on longer par 3s.

I play an 11-wood versus a 5-iron in my bag.

That’s traditional pitching wedge loft, so technically that should be a 14 wood…

  7. I have a 13 wood I’ve been playing. Goes sky high and about 125 to 130 yards.

My partner has one similar to this and it’s been her favourite and most consistent club while getting into golf

That’s the loft on my pitching wedge.

I said it here a while ago, but I played with a guy last year who had a 12 and a 15 wood. Wish I’d have taken a pic. He claimed to have a 17 wood but didn’t have it in the bag.
