Two of the biggest drivers of 2026 go head-to-head as we test the Callaway Quantum Max against the TaylorMade Qi4D in identical conditions to see which delivers the best blend of speed, distance, and accuracy.

Barring a surprise, two drivers will top the sales charts in 2026: the Callaway Quantum Max and the TaylorMade Qi4D.

Both are ‘core’ models designed to appeal to the widest possible range of golfers, from tour professionals to high handicappers.

But which one should you actually put in the bag?

To find out, we tested both drivers head-to-head in the same loft using the same shaft. The TaylorMade Qi4D features two swappable sole weights, so we tested it in both its back and forward positions to see how performance changed – and how each compared with the Callaway.

Testing was conducted by PGA Professional Neil Wain, whose extremely consistent ball striking allows us to gather reliable data without removing large numbers of mishits, and TG Equipment Editor Alex Lodge, whose lightning-fast swing speed – and occasionally less than elite accuracy – provides a real test for any driver.

The standout difference in this test was ball speed and carry distance.

The Quantum Max produced 163.7mph, almost 3mph faster than the Qi4D in either weight setting.

That translated into the longest carry number of the three at 286.2 yards, which put it 3.5-5.4 yards clear of the TaylorMade, depending on setting.

It’s not that the Qi4D was slow or short – in both settings it was faster and longer than the test average – it’s just that the Quantum Max was the fastest driver of 2026 and the second longest. Across every driver from every brand, only its low-spin sibling, the Quantum Triple Diamond, topped it for carry distance.

If your priority is raw speed and carry distance, the Quantum Max is the clear winner here.

Winner: Callaway Quantum Max

Launch and spin

The Quantum Max launched a little higher than the Qi4D, with the TaylorMade launching more than 1° lower than the test average, in either setup.

The Qi4D’s adjustability gives the flexibility to adjust launch slightly; moving the heavier weight to the front lowered launch and peak height, producing a flatter flight.

Spin numbers were very close, although the TaylorMade Qi4D was a little more consistent in spin rate during Alex Lodge’s testing.

Peak height followed a similar pattern. The Quantum Max reached 30.2 yards – just below the test average of 31.5 – while the Qi4D flew noticeably flatter, particularly in the forward weight setting, where peak height dropped to 27.2 yards.

That flatter flight may appeal to golfers who prefer a more penetrating ball flight, while the Quantum Max produced a slightly higher window that helped maximize carry.

Winner: Tie

Dispersion numbers told a slightly more nuanced story.

The Qi4D with the forward weight produced the tightest left-to-right dispersion of the three at 11.8 yards, significantly tighter than the Quantum Max’s 15.9 yards.

That’s kudos to the Qi4D rather than a slight on the Callaway; that 15.9-yard figure matched the 2026 driver test average dispersion, meaning the Callaway sits right on the benchmark despite producing above average speed and distance.

Ball speed consistency favoured the Callaway, with the Quantum Max producing a smaller variance (1.9mph vs 3.1mph), suggesting slightly more consistent energy transfer across the face.

In terms of shot shape tendencies, the Quantum Max showed a slight fade bias, while the Qi4D tended to favour a left miss and was a little easier to turn over.

Winner: TaylorMade Qi4D

TaylorMade Qi4D sole.Looks

Looks are subjective, but the Qi4D is the clear winner for us.

“I think TaylorMade encapsulates the perfect modern driver,” says Alex Lodge.

The Qi4D has a clean, modern shape, and although the head looks slightly compact for a core model, it frames the ball beautifully at address.

The Quantum Max looks a little busier. Its multi-material finish combines gloss and matte sections, while the sole features grey accents that divide opinion.

“I asked Callaway what the grey was about and they told me it was inspired by surveys asking people what color car they might like,” Alex explains. “But this isn’t a car – it’s a driver – and I think matte black accents would make it look much faster.”

The Callaway certainly isn’t unattractive, but the TaylorMade simply looks more premium and cohesive.

Winner: TaylorMade Qi4D

Like looks, feel comes down to personal preference, but in this instance, the Callaway Quantum Max was the clear pick for our testers.

The titanium face produces a slightly higher-pitched impact sound, while the carbon-heavy Qi4D delivers a lower, more muted note.

However, the Callaway provided noticeably better feedback across the face.

“I’m not that much of a fan of the feel across the face on the Qi4D,” Alex says. “It almost feels like there’s a vibration dampener in there.”

Despite looking extremely fast, the TaylorMade didn’t feel quite as lively through impact as the Callaway.

The Quantum Max, by contrast, felt powerful and responsive, which reinforces the speed numbers we saw in the data.

The verdict

This is a classic distance versus control driver battle.

The Quantum Max delivered more ball speed, more carry distance, and a more responsive feel, making it the clear choice if you prioritise raw speed and power.

The Qi4D, meanwhile, offers adjustability, more consistent spin, and slightly tighter dispersion in its forward weight setting, which may appeal to golfers looking for a touch more control and forgiveness.

In simple terms, the Quantum Max feels like a 65/35 split between distance and accuracy, while the Qi4D is closer to 50/50.

If you want maximum speed, the Quantum Max is the winner.

If you prefer a slightly more balanced, controllable driver with adjustable weighting, the Qi4D remains a strong alternative.

Winner: For speed and distance, Callaway Quantum Max. For accuracy and spin consistency, TaylorMade Qi4D.
