ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, Calif. -Colorado women’s golf is in ninth place after day one of the GameAbove Invitational, at the Rolling Hills Country Club.
The Buffaloes were led by Carolyn Fuller, who carded a 3-under 69 in the second round to move to even par for the tournament, the best score among the CU lineup through 36 holes. She jumped up 22 spots between rounds one and two and is tied for seventh place overall.
Fuller rebounded from a first round 75 and delivered a steady afternoon that included strong play on both sides of the course. Her 34 on the back nine helped anchor Colorado’s push late in the round.
“I thought Rolling Hills played tough today,” Colorado head coach Madeleine Sheils said. “It demands your full focus and a lot of decision making on every single shot, and we struggled to make and execute those good decisions consistently throughout the day. Our short game also wasn’t as sharp as we need it to be, so we lost a good amount of shots around the hole.”
Despite the team’s challenges, Fuller’s second round stood out on a course where low scores were difficult to find.
“Carolyn played beautifully this afternoon,” Sheils said. “Three under is an awesome score on a course where really par is your friend on more than half of the holes. She had really great focus and used awesome course management to put herself in good position time and time again.”
Ellen O’Shaughnessy finished the day at 9-over after a 75 in round two, while Teemapat Pateetin sits at 7-over.
Vanessa Ngo posted an 80 in the second round, bringing her tournament total to 13 over, and Maya McVey rounded out Colorado’s scoring with a 78, sitting at 16 over through 36 holes.
Colorado will look to climb the leaderboard in the final round Tuesday. No. 2 USC sits atop of the leaderboard, shooting 13-under par, followed by No. 4 Texas A&M at 1-over.
“We talked about the need to learn quickly from today,” Sheils said. “We have to be fast learners, ready to take lessons from how to play shots strategically into and around these greens.”
Colorado will group with Arizona and UCLA for Tuesday’s final round, beginning off the 10th tee at 9 a.m. MT.
