DALY CITY, Calif. (March 9, 2026) – Washington State Men’s Golf fired a second-round score of 15-under, 273, the lowest of the round and second-lowest of the day, to move up seven spots and finish the first 36 holes in fourth place at 17-under, 559, at the 2026 Desimone Invitational, played Monday on the par-72, 6,915-yard Lake Merced Golf Club.

After finishing the first round at 2-under, 286, tied for 11th overall, the Cougars caught fire in the second round collecting 27 birdies en route to posting the 10th-lowest score related to par in program history. In an incredibly strong field, with 10 of the 15 teams ranked in the Top 50 nationally, WSU (-17) sits fourth behind Arizona State (-29), TCU (-22) and SMU (-20). The only ranked teams to finish Monday ahead of the Cougars were ASU (ranked No. 9) and TCU (No. 39).

Ben Borgida, a redshirt-junior, was solid throughout his first 36 holes to lead the Cougars as he shot 69-67 to finish the second round at 8-under, 136, tied for fourth overall. Borgida opened his day with a double bogey but got back to even five holes later with a pair of birdies. Another bogey on eight left him 1-over with eight holes to play. Five birdies over his next seven holes, including four straight at one point, pushed him to -4 before a bogey on his 18th hole capped a 3-under round. Borgida kept his hot hand on his second 18, firing six birdies against one bogey to finish his second round at 5-under. His 13 birdies are tied for the most in the field while his three bogeys are tied for fifth-fewest.

Senior Sam Renner opened his day with a 1-over, 73, after a double-bogey on the par-4, 12th, his 16th hole after starting on the back nine. Renner obviously took mental notes on his first round as he shot a bogey-free, 7-under, 65 in Round 2. Following the first round, Renner moved up 45 spots on the leaderboard and finished his first 36 holes at 6-under, 138, tied for ninth overall. Renner’s second round of 7-under, 65, ties the ninth-lowest single round in program history, and one off his career-best of 8-under, 64, set at the National Golf Invitational in May, 2024.

Sophomore Garrett Harrison, the lone Cougar player to have played the Lake Merced course prior to this week, went 72-69 to finish Monday at 3-under, 141, tied for 28th overall. Harrison was at 3-under through his first 12 holes in the first round, but three bogeys over his final sex holes left him at even par in round 1. His second round consisted of seven birdies, seven pars and three bogeys as he posted a 3-under, 69, to finish his first 36 holes.

Sophomore Dylan Burcham was steady during his first two rounds, posting scores of 73-72 to finish the day at 1-over, 145. In his first round, Burcham posted three birdies against four bogeys to end up 1-over through 18. He started slow on his second round, with four bogeys through his first eight holes. But four birdies and six pars over his final 10 holes drew him back to even for the round and 1-over for the day, tied for 52nd overall.

Freshman Dylan Boenning opened his tournament with an even-par round of 72, which included two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars. Boenning’s second 18 included three more birdies but a triple on the par-4 12th proved to be the difference in his round as he finished with a 3-over, 75, giving him a two-round score of 3-over, 147, tied for 64th overall.

The Desimone Invitational concludes Tuesday morning with a final 18 holes. The shotgun start will begin at 8:15 a.m.
