PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Justin Thomas is the latest PGA Tour pro to become an apparel free agent.
Thomas had an apparel deal with Greyson Clothiers since March 2022, which expired — he previously had a deal with Polo, too — and he’s elected to follow in the footsteps of Tommy Fleetwood and wear whatever he wants on the course.

“It’s kind of nice,” he said on Monday during a press conference ahead of the Players Championship, the PGA Tour’s flagship event. “Just was one of those things that, you know, when it’s right and when something makes sense, the timing, it will be what it is. But now, for the time being, yeah, I’m just kind of enjoying what I’m most comfortable in and whatever it is at that specific time.”

It’s become commonplace for Tour pros to elect to be equipment free agents so that they can play the clubs that they think will make them the most money in this era of big-money paydays. Most top tour pros have settled for an apparel brand ambassador. With prize money growing, some players are opting for the freedom to do their own scripting rather than being told what outfits to wear.

“It’s refreshing but it’s also, it’s harder,” Thomas said. “I mean my wife will tell you like I’ll sit there and just stare in my closet and look and say, ‘OK, I can do this with this.’
“I mean, I love clothes. I love fashion. I’ve always enjoyed it. So that being said, when it comes to like packing I’m not having her pick the stuff out for me or like I’m not just kind of grabbing some pants and shirts. I like to put together outfits and figure it out. But because I’m doing it it’s probably taking me quite a bit longer than it did the other way.
“It’s fun to be able to do me. It’s just kind of like whatever you’re waking up and feeling that day type thing. But may have to put a little more thought of it ahead of time for some weeks.”

Fleetwood split with Nike and has made headlines for wearing the logo of several of the golf courses that he’s played, including Augusta National, Pebble Beach and last week Bay Hill. Thomas, who has been spotted in Holderness & Bourne as well as Greyson, said he and Fleetwood have been keeping tabs on their outfits.
“We’ve kind of joked and seen each other here and there and we’ll kind of look at what they’re wearing, kind of look at the tag, see what’s going on,” he said.
