Lakes Entrance Golf Club staged six events last week, attracting a massive 324 players on course.

Members and visitors continue to praise the efforts of the course staff, who consistently have the course looking in magnificent condition.

Last Tuesday’s Young and the Rest of Us session was won by Julieanne Webb, with Carole Dostine runner-up. At Ruthless and Toothless, “A” grade went to Ian Stephens on countback from Allan Taylor, while John Anderson took “B” grade. Leslie Rodgers won the putting award, with Bernie Hoppe claiming the session NAGA.

Wednesday’s medley stableford was won by Jenny Dowie with 37 points.

Classy left-hander Mark Jackson had a day out last Thursday, winning “A” grade and overall with 42 points on a day when high scores were few. Chris Fenner was successful in “B” grade with 36 points, while Lee Burt took “C” grade with 37 points.

Saturday saw 131 players tee up in the medley stableford event, including a contingent from Cobram Barooga. The event was won by confident “B” grade player Josh Piper with a sensational 41 points. Perennial club champion Stuart Yates took “A” grade with 38 points on countback from long-hitting veteran Shane Sproule. Igor Malajew won “C” grade on countback from Julie Rowe, both finishing with 36 points, while Marlene Holmes took “D” grade on countback from consistent Lori Murray.

Sunday was George Peel Day, with Cobram Barooga’s Brian Oldham winning the overall event and “B” grade with an impressive 41 points. Another Cobram Barooga player, Molly Ryan, won “A” grade with 39 points, while Holmes was again prominent, taking “C” grade with 35 points.

The club has also announced plans to run free golf clinics for female beginners aged 16 and over on Mondays, with starting dates and times to be confirmed. All equipment will be supplied, and the sessions will be led by local member and former club captain Norm Backman, a low-handicap golfer known for his willingness to share technical knowledge of the game.
