Georgia women’s golf finished on the bottom half of the leaderboard at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, from Monday to Wednesday. After shooting a total of 28-over par, Georgia rounded out at 11 out of 17 in the field.
The Bulldogs struggled from round one, shooting 19-over par as a team, despite redshirt junior Karoline Tuttle’s 1-under finish, the only Bulldog to shoot under par that day. This started the Bulldogs to trail most of the leader board in 15th place.
“Today was tough and the finish was definitely not what we needed,” head coach Erika Brennan said. “I thought they hung in so well through some really difficult holes and then we just didn’t close out our rounds. This golf course is a tough test and it’s so much more about bogey and big number avoidance especially when the wind is up.”
Round 2 of the tournament was more hopeful. The Bulldogs notched their way up slightly to 14th place after shooting 10-over as a team.
Mid-year enrollee and freshman Trinity Beth stepped up for Georgia shooting 2-under, the only under-par scorer for Round 2 on the team. The rest of the counting scores finished in the mid-70s.
Round 3 was a big turnaround for the Bulldogs, shaving 11 strokes from the prior day and three spots on the leaderboard. Tuttle managed the course well, tabling a 4-under round with no bogeys that sealed her a top-five finish in the competitive field.
Beth also contributed to the 1-under team finish on round 3 shooting 1-under, finishing in 9th place individually.
“Karoline was impressive all week, she was so committed to her process,” Brennan said. “And for Trinity to get a top-10 in this field in just her third college tournament is awesome.”
While Georgia posted high numbers for a majority of Monday through Wednesday as a team, the field was extremely competitive, including four top-10 ranked teams and 11 top-25 ranked teams.
Georgia will compete at the Briars Creek Invitational March 16-17 at The Golf Club at Briars Creek in Kiawah Island, South Carolina.
