Struggling to escape bunkers consistently? In this lesson, Coach Ed Schwent breaks down the 5 biggest mistakes golfers make in greenside bunkers — and how to fix them step by step. From setup myths to distance control, you’ll learn why most recreational players are copying tour techniques that simply don’t match their swing speed.

Ed explains why a square stance often works better than opening everything up, how to control the bottom of your swing using the line drill, and the “dinner plate” visualization that makes solid contact repeatable. You’ll also learn a simple distance formula (carry = one-third of a normal turf swing) that makes bunker yardages predictable instead of guesswork.

Finally, you’ll see how to handle different lies — fluffy sand, tight lies, and plugged shots — plus a powerful “cheat code” bunker setup that improves consistency instantly. If bunker shots intimidate you, these fundamentals will help you splash it out confidently and lower your scores fast.

  1. I always seem to play my bunker shots like any other shot I have and I just naturally get behind the ball and right now it always seems to work out seems to be my strongest part of my game

  2. Good lesson. Most of us don't have a practice bunker. Our group plays 21 different courses and only a couple have a bunker available. Can you practice your swing at the edge of woods where there may be pine needles or leaves? Bob K

  3. I have a hand under golf grip and have been told to use a neutral grip. The 90 degree angle is going to give me a more vertical swing than my normal swing. How much hip rotation on the back swing? It looks minimal. Thanks! Bob K

  4. Excellent techniques. It's always bothered me that most golf coaches teach methods that are for Tour level swing speeds when the majority of amateur golfers are nowhere near that speed. For amateurs that open your stance and swing towards the left you're going to have inconsistent, at best, results. This was good teaching.

  5. Thank you so much Ed . I use to be able to open the club, wedge and pop the ball out ,but the last 10 years I’ve been struggling. Lots of blades and skulling the shot , last year I got a wedge with 12 degrees of bounce hopping that would help but haven’t tried it out yet . Just wondering if the sand is hard and packed down,is it the same technique?? You are such a wonderful instructor. Bless you great teacher.
