The field is in place for the 2026 Puerto Rico Open, scheduled to take place March 2-8 at the Grand Reserve Golf Club. As an opposite-field event, the Puerto Rico Open offers players who didn’t qualify for Signature Events or major purses a valuable opportunity: a chance to earn full FedEx Cup points, a two-year PGA Tour exemption, and a career-changing victory.

While the tournament doesn’t carry the same prize money as many full-field Tour stops, with a purse of $4 million, it has become an important battleground for rising prospects, sponsor exemptions, and players seeking momentum in the early portion of the season. With a competitive roster confirmed, the Puerto Rico Open promises to be a captivating week of golf with real implications for the rest of the campaign.

Last Year’s Champion

The 2025 Puerto Rico Open produced one of the more memorable breakthrough performances of last season when Karl Vilips captured his first PGA Tour victory in just his fourth career start. Vilips, a rookie at the time, fired steady golf throughout the week, carding rounds of 65-67-66-64 to finish at 26-under par and secure his first PGA Tour victory.

Vilips earned $720,000 for the victory along with 300 FedExCup points, a significant boost in the standings that helped solidify his status on Tour. Beyond the prize money and points, the win granted him a two-year PGA Tour exemption.

“It’s a dream come true for me and my dad,” Vilips said at the time. “This is what we dreamed of as a kid.”

His victory reinforced what the Puerto Rico Open represents: opportunity. For players in this year’s field, Vilips’ performance is proof that a strong week in Puerto Rico can change everything in just four days.
