SPOKANE, Wash. — The Qualchan Golf Course has officially opened for the spring season, welcoming golfers a week earlier than usual. Golfers have been seen coming and going throughout the day, enjoying the early start to the season.
City Golf Manager Mark Poyer expressed his excitement about the early opening, noting its benefits.
“Well obviously it’s a great, you know, it’s a great early start to the season. So that’s obviously a really good start for us financially. Getting players out there and also, you know, taking advantage of this great weather we’re having,” said Poyer.
Qualchan Golf Course regular Alex Zyler shared his enthusiasm for the early start as well.
“I feel like it gets sooner and sooner every year, so yeah. Found out opening day and a couple asked to play, and I didn’t have the fortitude to say no,” said Zyler.
Poyer mentioned that golfers will notice some changes made during the off-season.
“Mainly the tree work that we’ve done, to improve some of the areas where trees were kind of blocking shots, like, for example the hole number six. We took out some trees there to widen that tee shot up a little bit. So the people that play here will definitely notice it,” said Poyer.
He also appreciates the close-knit community at Qualchan Golf Course and looks forward to seeing familiar faces.
“That’s the one thing that we do really look forward to every year, is to see those familiar faces. It’s much like a kind of a close-knit community when it comes to golfers, you know?” said Poyer.
The Esmeralda Golf Course in northeast Spokane also opened today. Poyer noted that the remaining courses in Spokane will open in the coming weeks.
