If you are in a tournament/competition I would ask a playing partner if they agree since I doubt this is a tournament with a rules official or anything.

If you’re looking to play by the letter of the rules, read Rule 16. It gives information about free relief options. In a tournament this would surely be marked as Ground Under Repair. If not, it sure looks like some sort of animal hole which would also entitle free relief.
wishitwasapar
Also possibly burrowing animal hole. Free relief.
Doug_McQuaid
If you keep your head down and rotate properly you should be able to get it outta there
ItsHipCheck
Take your shot, Mr. Gilmore.
CivilMagazine99
Definitely. If a real course, woukd be circled as ground under repair. It’s just part of a course in terrible shape. Clearly should not be a penalty moving the ball out of that situation
Ill_be_in_the_rough
That’s free relief under 16.1 – abnormal course condition, specifically free relief from animal holes.
oneangrywaiter
You can piss on it and call it standing water.
rgp005
Of course not, you’re allowed to dig all around the ball, flatten the ground and then shank a 7 iton.
EliteBallPlacement
Definitely not how the course is designed to be setup, ground under repair/animal burrow – free relief.

Grab your hybrid, and swing away, Merrill.

Nothing is unplayable if you’re brave enough.

Call an archeologist, that’s a dinosaur print! You can follow PGA guideline 17.1(b) for playing in this situation.

Rule 16.1, you’re entitled to 1 club from nearest relief.

That’s an embedded lie (assuming you’re playing with the new Titleist Pro V1 hand grenades)
1ib3r7yr3igns
It’s in an abnormal course condition.
Free relief. Find the nearest point of reference of complete relief and drop within one club length not nearer to the hole.
lechuckswrinklybutt
You would get relief from that under rule 16 but that is not the same as “unplayable”, rule 19.
Determining that a lie is unplayable is completely up to you in that case. You could invoke the rule on the green. But it’s a 1 stroke penalty.

You playing at Jurassic Park?

How much money is on the line? Anyone with any sportsmanship would allow a drop here.
DisconcertingMale
Unplayable is up to your discretion. You can take it anywhere. This would more likely be GUR and you’d get free relief
Own-Yesterday-656
Thats a tough lie. Not even my ol’ leather wedge will clear that. 👞💥
AnimanicManiac
Free relief 1 club length to either side but not closer right?

ground under repair in my book.
It’s hard to know without more visual context but it looks like ground under repair to me. and you’d be entitled to take free relief.
Lol this isn’t the tour, just take it out of the hole
Yeah that’s an abnormal course condition. Also….”Edge of the green”?????????????? Where you playing?
Bro please just pick up the damn ball and move it. We aren’t on the tour, don’t risk injury. It’s not that serious
I’d say that looks like something dug there like a burrowing animal which is free relief.
This is why I have a shovel as my 14th club.
Looks like the definition of holed in my opinion. Congrats on eagle.
Play the ball as it lies.
If you’re a gopher
Nah, just get under it a little, you’ll be ok
You would get free relief from animal holes under 16.1
No you should try and hit that
GUR or possible burrowing animal – free relief in my book
I would say this falls under ground under repair or possibly an animal hole, https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/rules-hub/topics/abnormal-course-conditions-embedded-ball.html.

What….does the rest of the green look like
I had to hit it off Frankenstein’s fat foot!
Totally playable, I’d suggest your spade wedge.
Play it as it lies.
Just need to use your Hole Wedge
Outside normal course conditions. Free relief.
