Go and play Sunningdale Heath 18 holes and adjacent to Sunningdale Old – under 4000 yards and tougher to score than The Old – that is through experience having played the both hundreds if times over the last 50 years – lengthening just negates the ability to score due to age and loss of length with regular golfers – plenty if beautiful short courses and eventually every golfer loses length but not every golfer loses their short game 👌
If the pros didn’t have spotters and they had to look for their own balls they would dramatically rein In the distances they hit
Oakmont was proof that penal Rough is the way forward for the PGA Tour. Even the likes of top players were having some real issues. Tighter fairway and fairways cut across rather than down the fairway creating grain will curb the massive distances.
If you multiply the distance you carry a 5 iron x 36 you get the length of a course in yards you will enjoy playing. For example if you carry a 5 iron 150 yards you get 5400 yards! It may be the length of your own club from the forward tees. Have you ever played from there? I've not played these courses but the 2nd course at Royal County Down and the 2nd course at Cruden Bay are both said to be absolute gems!
Length is the lazy architect’s way to “protect par.”
