Perfect Green reading doesn’t help if you can’t roll the ball on your intended target line. “How to Putt the Right Way” will help with that https://johnevans.graphy.com
This is actually plum bobbing. This exactly how Sam Snead described how he did it
just viewed your video for teh first time and had never heard of this putting method, even though I've been playing golf since 1970, and during the 90's to early naughties was a professional tour caddy. Did some googling before replying and discovered that this egos method has been around since 2015. Now I do intend to give it a try on Tuesday for my next round, but my question is this, if it's as quick and effective as teh video states why don't we see any pros (men or women) using it?
Wouldn’t this assume the slope doesn’t change from the ball to the hole? If it’s flat at the hole but slopes near the hole or vice versa, this wouldn’t be as accurate I’m assuming.
1. When you are talking about gap for the day, is that based on how fast the greens run? Gap one for slow, gap 2 for medium, gap three for fast ( just examples)? Meaning you could have the exact same putt on different days and have a completely different amount of break.
2. What if the practice greens are different t than the course greens?
3. The double break is easy to understand how you know, but I’m struggling to understand how to determine how much break to apply to each section. Thanks!
This works great @misteroneputt a couple of things that I noticed that might help others.
1. Use the hand that is opposite the break to hold the putter for a better .
2. This does not work great for shorter putts.
3. This gives you the geometric break perfectly, but this should not give you the idea that it gives you the apex of the break. You still have to interpret the speed to pick a spot according to the roll

Using any club's shaft to "see" a line is already flawed because all shafts are tapered from grip to head. So you can ever truly "see" a straight line as the top of the shaft is tapering down and inward towards the head. Also, depending on your particular putter, the way you let it hang, has an additional bias as your putter head does not actually hang straight below your grip, so you need to "calibrate" that and figure that out for each putter you may use and frankly most folks have difficulty doing that. Which is plain to see in your video. Most folks are better off hanging the grip end down. At least then the shaft will hang perpendicular to the ground, shaft taper still being an issue but closer to truly reading the break. In practicing on the practice green, you are better off using a ball at the end of a string. THEN you will get and honestly straight line from the plumb line. I don't believe that is legal though in the course of playing a round. In play I use my long putter hanging upside down and my line is read off of my 14 inch Super Stroke grip, which has no taper, being straight from bottom to top, so that gives me and unbiased line from which to read. Bottom line is that this method can only give you a hint of what the break does but not how severe it truly may be. Green speed being the greatest factor in how much a rolling ball will break.
In the video, you show as real the "imaginary line" between the ball and the cup, and you have the putter sitting on the "2nd Object". Looks easy, except on the course there is no line and where does this "2nd Object" come from?
Hello John. I see there are some non beliebers and that is ok. I can't feel the slope through my feet so aim point is a non event. I suspect that if you do not get the bottom of the "calibrated" shaft over the imaginary line between ball and hole, then the read will be wrong – I think it I the easiest thing to do incorrectly. I have been practicing this for a week now since I saw your other video and watched the interview with Andrew also. You can check your body alignment by putting a magazine or 2 under one foot and standing in front of mirror to see if you are aligned. I stand flat footed and knees straight. It is easy to test on a known slope on your practice green to see the read results. For putts under 5 feet or slope determination, I stand the same at the ball and hang the calibrated putter between my feet – it will hang to one side and let you know the slope when you can't figure it out or because of the optical illusion. This has totally removed anxiety over these short putts as to where do I aim. For working out slope stand sideways to the line to gauge slope by hanging the putter as before. Anyway, I gave myself a 30 foot put on a wet green after sprinklers finished yesterday; and it went right to left, but turned about 1 yard from hole, so a double break I did not see. I put the ball back and took another reading from hole to ball, reduced the aim line and sunk the putt – I could not believe it. I also noticed that my distance control is almost dead weight for most putts now. You are still not going to make all putts, but for me the number of 10 to 20 foot putts I hole now is up there compared to before.
Amazing video! Thank you.
Whenever I see "this changes everything" I know it's click bait.
I HAVE NO IDEA YOUR TALKING ABOUT.
STILL DONT GET IT WHERE IS YOUR MESURMENT
You didn’t do it on the course John.
Great tip, I'm going to try this tomorrow! Thanks for sharing your knowledge good sir.
This assumes the slope is consistent from where you're standing all the way to the hole, not real in most cases. You don't have an opportunity to "calibrate" a green while playing. Sure, if I practice on a green, reading it becomes easy.
Not sure I am getting the eyes correct. Wouldn’t you use the same eye as the side holding the putter?
I've played there at Bali Hai. Cool course!
Question: when you match the slope with your hips, spine and head when you stand over the ball, aren't you measuring the slope at the ball location rather than the hole? I'm confused as to how the slope where you are standing (which in one example is 27 feet away from the hole) measures the slope near the hole.
This is not new; there are YouTube videos from the guy who created this as far back as 10 years ago.
Interestingly, what you describe is what I learned as plumb bobbing. It gives you more than just the slope of a break, it gives you an aim point. I frequently use both aimpoint express and plumb bobbing and it gives me the same result.
cant wait to try this out 🙂
What an interesting technique! I have some questions though, how do you apply this to short putts? Which is the minimum distance to the hole where this would work?
Aloha, I like the technique but my home course, Aviara in Carlsbad, CA has greens with multiple breaks. If my ball is on the same slope as the hole, no problem. But if my ball is on flat spot and hole is on a slope, then what? Multiple breaks? Mahalo,
I use multiple methods of green reading, and I think your methods just add to my arsenal. Thank you.
I have a problem with the location of the second point along the straight line between the ball and the hole.
If you take a measurement somewhat close to the ball and compare the brake to a measurement at the halfway point, and you will see big differences in the break. So, to me the second point is something that should be precise not just based on finding a handy little blade of grass that’s Sideways even as far away is halfway to the hole. A second point at the midpoint of the line results in a break that is 1/2 of the break taken close to the ball on the very same line.
Ill give it a go im not confident that it works on all green speeds as break is very speed dependent but I think with practice it would give you a guid
I clicked "Like" but I'm not convinced this is helpful for most golfers. Personally, I geek out on this stuff, so take the stance, plumb the club and figure it out for myself. It would be super helpful if , on your demo examples, you'd add some sketched lines of what you're seeing and where you're aiming. For my taste, way to much talking and not enough simplification to help people visualize.
Amazing simple!
I would be keen to understand how you apply this method when the break close to the hole is steeper then at your ball Position?
But we all use different length putter shafts. How does that affect the read. I've been plum bobbing for 6 years with much success and it does give you an aimpoint as well
I thought I'd report on how it went after using this method for several months. In short, it works great! I am definitely reading the greens better; and have even come to rely on my reads with this method over what I think I'm seeing with just my eyes. I have learned 2 things. #1: I think it works best if I stand behind the hole and look back to the ball. I think this gives me a better read on the break near the pin, where the ball is rolling slower and will break more. #2: Be careful not to turn your head too much! I have a tendency to do this, and it messes me up. The head turn is actually rather subtle; just be careful. So thanks Mr. One Putt!
So confusing
What if its flat at your ball and breaks near the hole
I am an engineer myself, but I simply don't get it. What line are you seeing ? Where is the aiming point in the end ? How do you make sure the putter is exactly over your ball ? Sounds way too complicated or the explanation just isn't precise enough and gets lost in a lot of talking. Why not highlighting the line and the gap grapically in the video ? Or is this just a teaser to sell your classes ? No offense.
You didnt say where to hold the putter. You just said hold it up. Hold it up where? I can hold it up anywhere, looks like you just put it a little off your line and say heres the target
I would do this, but my hips are not balanced haha. I'm off tilt on flat ground.
Show me a 20 hdcp using this, without assistance from you…..
I can never follow your descriptions of the procedures ?
Would need to be standing beside you on the green then I could understand !
???
"A plumb bob, plumb bob level, or plummet, is used as a vertical direction as a reference line, or plumb-line." You ARE using the putter as the plumb bob, you ARE plumb bobbing. How you use that reference created by plumb bobbing is irrelevant and why so many people are confused – you are not accurately or clearly stating what you're doing, which is using the plumb bob as a reference (plumb bobbing) versus your tilted spine to create a measurement system of "gaps" and "angles". I would guess that people in construction and design will struggle to use your tilted spine method as their eyes are so often seeking plumb and true horizontal. The fluid in our ears is also always seeking level, so I don't see how standing tilted is something that is very dependable. Watch a guy walk across a pitched roof…He isn't standing perpendicular to the pitch, but rather using his knees, ankles and hips to plumb his back and keep his weight centered between his feet. Knowing that 99% of the time the hole will be cut with 1, 2, 3 and maybe 4% grade, it isn't very hard to learn 4 degrees of pitch and pick it correctly by feel.
Are you always using the same eye or do you use both eyes?
Your system starting from Grip/setup/shoulders, WOW , I wish I knew this 50 years ago! Dropped 10 shots per round after two weeks practice. Thanks………………..
I get seeing a gap. I’m missing what the gap means. Is the gap the high side or low?
