AT LONG LAST
The Phoenix has waited patiently for the start of its 2026 spring season to arrive, having not played since winning its annual Elon Phoenix Invitational in mid-October. Elon was set to compete in the Battle at Briar’s Creek on Feb. 2-3 on Johns Island, South Carolina, but the event was canceled due to cold temperatures.
FALL MOMENTUM
Elon’s 54-hole, program-record score of 818 (-34) in the Elon Phoenix Invitational was an exclamation point on a promising 2025 fall season for a nine-man roster with six new faces. The Phoenix earned three top-five finishes in four tournaments played, including a runner-up effort at the West Bay Collegiate Invitational on Oct. 6-7 that preceded the home victory the following week. Elon shot under par collectively in nine of 12 rounds, with five Phoenix owning stroke averages of 72.80 or lower, led by junior Jack Wieler’s 69.00.
JACK ATTACK
Wieler, a two-time All-CAA selection in each of his first two collegiate seasons, was superb in the fall with three top-10 finishes – including a pair of ties for third place – in addition to his 69.00 stroke average. He collected his fourth career CAA weekly award in October following a 10-under 206 at West Bay Club and followed that with a collegiate-low 54-hole score of 204 at the Elon Phoenix Invitational.
THE NEW CAST
Much has changed in Elon’s personnel department since the Phoenix captured its first CAA Championship last spring and advanced to the NCAA Bremerton Regional. Five freshmen – Carr, Lewis, Martin Saquicoray, Somogyi and Yeagley – were mainstays in the fall, each playing in the lineup or as individuals in at least three of the four tournaments. Yeagley showed a steady hand with top-20 individual finishes in all four tournaments to go along with a 70.25 stroke average, while Carr’s highs have been eye catching; the latter has shot 67 twice already and set the Elon freshman low 54-hole record with a 206 at the West Bay Collegiate in October.
IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT
Elon men’s golf head coach Don is in his 12th year at the program’s helm in 2025-26. Hill was honored as the 2024-25 CAA Coach of the Year following the Phoenix’s impressive conference title win in New Jersey last April, in addition to six other top-five finishes during the season. With six total freshmen on the nine-man roster this year, Hill has blended Elon’s mix of experienced and unproven as the team enters the 2026 spring slate.
