GULFPORT, Miss. – The Little Rock women’s golf team delivered a strong showing Monday, finishing 1-1 during the opening day of match play competition at the Great River Cup at Windance Country Club.
The Trojans fell 3.5-1.5 to host Louisiana-Monroe in the morning round before bouncing back in impressive fashion with a 3.5-1.5 victory over James Madison in the afternoon. With the split, Little Rock sits in third place among the eight-team field heading into the final day of competition.
“It was not a bad first day,” Little Rock head coach Jenna Birch said. “ULM is a great team and played us very well. We bounced back well in the afternoon and got a big win over James Madison.”
Sophomore lara Martin led the way for the Trojans, finishing the day a perfect 2-0 in her matches. She earned Little Rock’s lone point against Louisiana-Monroe with a convincing 3&2 victory over Daniela Campillo Martinez, then followed with another strong performance in the afternoon, defeating James Madison’s Bella Flores 1 up.
Elvira Flodstrom delivered consistent play throughout the day, halving both of her matches, including against Louisiana-Monroe’s Emma Lucrezia Manzini and James Madison’s opponent in the afternoon round.
Little Rock’s depth proved decisive in the win over James Madison, as Cloe Poizac and Eleonore Aernouts each secured key match victories to help the Trojans earn the team win.
The Trojans will close out the tournament Tuesday morning against in-state rival Arkansas State, which split its matches Monday with a loss to Southern Miss (4-1) and a win over Memphis (3.5-1.5).
“We are looking forward to the final day,” Birch said. “We will have to play solid golf to beat Arkansas State. We are obviously very familiar with them. It will be a good test for us, but we feel good about it after the way we played against James Madison.”
Little Rock will tee off against Arkansas State at 8 a.m. as the Trojans look to finish strong and continue building momentum early in the spring season.
