It’s back to back Signature Events on the PGA Tour – but who will rule at Riviera? Here’s our resident expert’s Genesis Invitational betting tips…

As the old saying goes: PGA Tour Signature Events are like London buses. You wait ages for one and then two come along at once.

After the emotional scenes at Pebble Beach as Collin Morikawa ended a two-and-a-half-year battle with almost every facet of his usually fine-tuned game, 80 of the world’s finest move down the California coast to Riviera Country Club to be greet by host Tiger Woods ahead of the Genesis Invitational.

Before we get to the handful of names I’ve picked out for glory, let’s remind ourselves of the finer details…

Genesis Invitational betting tips

The Banker: Tommy Fleetwood

22/1 e/w (Betfred 5 Places 1/4 Odds)

After a slow start to the year over on the DP World Tour, normal service resumed for Tommy Fleetwood on the other side of the Atlantic with a tie for 4th at Pebble Beach.

The Englishman, who is looking to build on his first PGA Tour win at the 2025 Tour Championship, looked in fine shape on Sunday, notching up six birdies, four of which came on over the last six holes. An opening bogey meant he had to settle for a 66, but he should head down the road to Riviera full of confidence.

Ranking 17th in SG Approach last week, there’s room to grow for Fleetwood in that department, but it was encouraging to see him gain strokes across the board, with his work around the greens particularly tidy, leading to him ranking 2nd in SG Tee to Green overall.

Fleetwood has played here four times, making 4/4 cuts and improving every time. Earlier in his career he finished a more modest 37th and 28th, but the past two times he’s finished 20th and 10th. His final-round 67 here on Sunday two years ago was the best he’s put together on this golf course, and he’s a better player now then he was then. He also arrives without the burden of a maiden PGA Tour win on his shoulders.

He will want to kickstart this season in the same fashion he ended the last, and a win here this week would certainly put him in good spirits ahead of the Masters, an event that correlates incredibly well with the winners’ list here.

The Outsider: Matt Fitzpatrick

33/1 e/w (Bet365 8 Places 1/5 Odds)

We backed Matt Fitzpatrick last week, and while he couldn’t land us a place despite threatening for much of the tournament, I am happy to give him another shot at a good golf course for him.

He may have missed the cut on his past two visits here, but he also finished 30th and 5th on his first two, the latter seeing him sit 2nd after both round 1 and round 3. When 30th he shot a 3rd-round 68, and his opening 66 the following year, when 5th, was further indication he likes this test.

Now in form again, Fitzpatrick will look to build on a good ball-striking week at Pebble Beach, where he ranked 3rd in SG Approach and 6th in SG Tee to Green, let down massively by a terrible short game.

You have to go back to last year’s US Open for the last time he was so poor around the greens, so I am willing to call it an anomaly rather than thinking there’s any wider issue there. Instead we should focus on the best iron week of his career according to DataGolf’s True Strokes Gained metric.

This isn’t out the blue either, his ball striking has largely been excellent since last April, and his driver has been particularly good the past two events as well.

Given the rounds he’s put together here in the past, his current form, which has seen him hover in and around the top 10 almost religiously since June, and his impressive ball striking numbers last week – he looks a must bet to me.

We know Fitzpatrick likes Augusta, where he’s posted a couple of top 10s and a few more top 25s, so it makes perfect sense he would play well here.

Sort out that short game, and he’s right in the mix here.

The Long Shot: Tom Hoge

200/1 e/w (Betfred 5 Places 1/4 Odds)

Tom Hoge has started the season with an 8th at the American Express and a 14th place finish last week, both of which are signs that he’s coming back to the fore.

We know at his best Hoge is an elite iron player, but it’s been a while since he was at those dizzying heights, and that’s why the form has dropped off. A good week in that department at Pebble Beach though, where he ranked 7th in SG Approach and 10th for SG Tee to Green, should fill him with confidence. And he now returns to Riviera, where he’s finished 14th and 8th on his past two visits.

When 14th he was 7th after round 1 and 6th after round 3 and last time he was here he was sat inside the top 10 after every round, so it’s clear he has a bit of an affinity with that layout.

That’s perhaps no surprise when his sole PGA Tour victory came at Pebble Beach, he has finished runner-up at the American Express, and he’s got multiple top 10s across those two courses outside of that win and runner-up finish as well. Clearly he enjoys playing in California at the start of the year, and there was enough from Hoge last week from a ball-striking perspective to suggest another good run around here is entirely possible.

He’s been a bit hit and miss to start the season, either hovering around the top 10 or living around the cut line, with very little in between. It’s that volatility and his good iron play last week though, that might just make him a good bet here at long odds. When he’s in control of his ball striking he’s a danger anywhere, but particularly in California, and certainly at this golf course.

At big odds, I will take a shot on Hoge causing an upset in this elite field.
