GAINESVILLE- In a competitive Gators Invitational field, Charlotte Men’s Golf started their spring season with a fifth-place finish at the Mark Bostick Golf Course. This marked the 49th year of the event, tied for sixth longest-run D1 golf tournament. The course was played as a par-70 at 6,701 yards.
Charlotte shot 12 over par as a team (852) to finish inside the top five. American Conference rival South Florida, who the Niners edged out in a playoff last year in the conference championship, took fourth place this weekend 844 (+4).
Host school #10 Florida (813, -27) won the team title in dominant fashion by 14 strokes over #2 Auburn. #12 Oklahoma State finished third at 838 (-2).
COACH’S CORNER
“I feel like we had a few good individual rounds with Seb Cave and Daniel Boone, Jr. in round one,” said Head Coach Ryan Cabbage. “Chase Cline had a good first round as an individual. Today, when the wind picked up Boone, Jr. and Frazer Jones played well but overall, we did not play very well as a team. We struggled with putting and made mistakes around the greens. We couldn’t hit it into the spots and play from the positions that we needed on a consistent basis around a golf course like this with the conditions as they were. We are fortunate to finish fifth against a pretty good field. I do think that’s the sign of a good team as we didn’t play particularly well and still finished fifth. Although, it still wasn’t good enough to be competitive with the likes of Auburn and Florida. I think we are good enough to do so but we have to play well to keep up with those guys and we didn’t do that this week.”
