Charlie Woods, son of golf legend Tiger Woods, has committed to play collegiate golf at Florida State University.Woods, a junior, will join top-ranked 2027 prospect Miles Russell on the Seminoles’ team.FSU Hall of Famer Kenny Knox praised the recruitment, highlighting the potential for a national championship.Unlike his father who attended Stanford, Charlie Woods chose to stay in-state for his college career.
Kenny Knox — a Florida State Hall of Famer and three-time PGA Tour winner — was ecstatic, too, when the news broke.
Charlie Woods, the son of golf star Tiger Woods, announced Tuesday, Feb. 10, his commitment to play collegiately at Florida State. Woods, a junior at The Benjamin School in Palm Beach, will team up with top-ranked Class of 2027 prospect Miles Russell, giving the Seminoles and coach Trey Jones one of the most eye‑catching recruiting classes in the country.
“I’m really happy for the Florida State golf team to land two of the top junior players in the country,” Knox told the Tallahassee Democrat from his home near TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach. “That’s not easy to do.”
For Knox, the implications could stretch well beyond the buzz of signing day in November. FSU achieved its best finish in NCAA history as the national runner-up in 2023-24.
“Hopefully, they’ll keep improving and bring home a national championship — that’s the goal,” Knox said. “And it certainly doesn’t hurt to have Tiger hanging around, watching his son compete in tournaments. I’m just very excited about it. I’m glad it worked out for Florida State and for (coach) Trey (Jones).”
Charlie Woods has long been rumored to have interest in FSU
Woods had long been rumored to have interest in FSU, with Jones following him on multiple occasions during junior golf tournaments. Knox credited Jones for his ability to recruit and build relationships with both Charlie and Tiger Woods.
Charlie’s announcement on social media made it clear he does not plan to follow directly in his father’s footsteps. Tiger Woods famously played two years at Stanford before turning professional.
“I think Trey probably has a really good relationship with Tiger,” said Knox, who attended Leon High and graduated from FSU in 1979, turning professional the same year. “He’s followed Charlie throughout his junior career, and he’s done all the right things. Maybe Tiger didn’t want him to go all the way out to Stanford — you’d think that’s where he’d end up. That’s a long way from home.
“I think it’s a great decision to stay in state.”
Knox also pointed to FSU’s golfing tradition and Jones’ connections with several successful PGA Tour players he coached at FSU, including Luke Clanton, Brooks Koepka, Daniel Berger, Hank Lebioda, John Pak and others. Seminole alums have won 58 PGA Tour events.
Knox is eager to see how Woods develops in Tallahassee.
“Trey has done a great job, and he’s had some great players come through there,” Knox said. “Miles and Charlie are competitors, so it’ll be great to have them up here in Tallahassee, on the same team, working together. I think Charlie is ready to get out and see what he can do.
“Potential-wise, he has as much potential as anyone in the country,” Knox added. “Now it’s about seeing if he can do it — building confidence and consistency.”
