PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. (SMU) – SMU women’s golf wrapped up day one of the Therese Hession Regional Challenge in a tie for seventh place.
Facing a stacked field that includes each of the 16 teams ranked in the top 100 and 12 teams ranked in the top 50, the Mustangs shot 10-over par to end the day in a three-way tie for seventh place. Four Mustangs sit in the top half of the field. The 31st-ranked Mustangs are just four shots back of a spot in the top three. The Lauren Mason-led Mustangs are tied with the third-ranked team in the country Oregon and sit in front of the second-ranked team, USC.
Making her collegiate debut, freshman Kirra St-Laurent shot a team leading 72. She sits at one-over after a three-birdie day that saw her shoot a 35 on her first nine holes. St-Laurent holds a share of 17th-place.
Mackenzie Lee carded a 73, good for two over par to begin the second half of her senior season. She sits in a tie for 24th.
One shot back, Celine Chen shot a 74 on Sunday. Chen birdied two of her final five holes to move up the leaderboard. She holds a share of 36th.
Emily Odwin shot a 75, four-over to occupy a share of 44th. After Sunday’s round, Odwin has a 71.58 scoring average, still tops on the team.
Yoonjeong Huh carded an 82 to sit alone in 85th.
The Mustangs will look to advance further up the leaderboard in the middle round on Monday.
