WIRTZ AND EKITIKE CAN SAVE THIS LEAGUE! | Liverpool 4-1 Newcastle reaction

Liverpool put on one the performances of the season as they came from behind to beat Newcastle 4-1 at Anfield.

A Hugo Ekitike brace and goals from Florian Wirtz and Ibrahima Konate helped the hosts overcome Anthony Gordon’s early strike.

And Reds reporter David Lynch was left impressed by what he felt could prove to be a statement showing from the reigning champions.

That is because of the way that, unlike earlier in the campaign, they stood up to a physical test before imposing their will on the game.

Key to that were Wirtz and Ektike, who could just be the shining lights Liverpool need to guide the Premier League out of its recent dark age.

Konate and Ryan Gravenberch also receive a hefty share of the praise for their contributions to a memorable victory.

  1. Ekitike and wirtz are the shining lights in the darkness glad they are Liverpool players, I'm just enjoying today's game if after city Sunderland forest Brighton th no I'll start talking about us turning it around because it always turns into disappointment.

  2. Newcastle are set up for Premier league at the moment, but once they run out energy they don’t have enough quality. Liverpool spanked their backside.

  3. David, should we expect any business in light with the Slot “we’re trying to strengthen the squad” comment?

  4. This was a strange game; they were all over us, then once they scored, we bossed the rest of the game. We need to carry this on.

  5. Liverpool were stunning. Ekitike and Wirtz were fantastic together. Really happy for Ibou to score and he played well

  6. Great performance, but my one thought of this result is that Guimaraes and JoeLinton were not in Newcastle’s squad at all. They make a big difference and not having to match up our midfield against that physicality can’t be overlooked.

  7. The reality is I see a awaken gravenberg…a confident as always ekitike who don't feel threatened by no player…a szobo who know he is Liverpool best player this season and most of all wirtz a player who is exploding game by game plus a relationship blossoming with ekitike.. not to mention a isak looking on saying this is going to be ekitike and i who will share the goals.. and finally gapko desperation knowing another poor game will ultimately see his world cup spot and his Dutch coach no longer have no where to hide and Salah totally playing with his right foot gone left him with only his left foot with 1 year left at Liverpool if only he had keep that right foot in Liverpool maybe just maybe he could find a couple more goals that he desperately wants….im afraid all good things comes to an end at some point.. YNWA…to the benches.. the fans have your back..cannot feel good seeing a legend so poor and Chiesa sitting and been summoned for his usual 10mins max to impact games…Champion league trophy and fa cup or no more slot machine at Liverpool…

  8. An open game which suits us we know Newcastle don't play low block. So an entertaining game both going for it, a deserved win for us but why has it took this long?

  9. on Salah: good layoff to Flo but most of his other passes were so off and he couldn’t get past his man—although I’d say he was isolated & doubled up on a lot.

all in all, there’s much left to be desired. but maybe his role has changed now, and he’s only there to create space for the others to shine, till he passes on the torch to a new winger

  10. I’d like to see 3-4 games in a row with this type of performance. Although still some mistakes, it was a big improvement.

  11. Good all round performance. Particularly how the team is starting to gel. We haven't seen that yet from Liverpool. See when we go more direct what happens. Now we need to start working on corners as I still can't understand why we don't try more variations. Surely as we are doing different things with our set piece, we could make our corners more dangerous.

  12. I said this elsewhere on social media, I think that was one of the best, if not THE best offensive performances by any one in the PL this season.

  13. Excellent commentary on teams like Liverpool hopefully leading the way to better football in the league. In hindsight, we all should have expected that it would take a few months for Wirtz and Ekitike to work themselves up to PL standards, physically and tactically.

  14. Maybe Sloth will finally realize that this team plays better fast. No more hand brakes please.

  15. If Newcastle came to play and got blown away, why do you think any club outside the top 6 will listen to pleas of ditching haramball? It's worked so well against Liverpool didn't it? Sure, it'll make the EPL a better product, but which club is going to put the interests of the league ahead of themselves and set themselves up for the slaughter before Liverpool in the name of quality entertainment?

The argument comes across a tad naive like Newcastle's approach to the game tonight.

  16. Great analysis again David. The premier league is such a dull league right now. Hope we can enjoy watching Liverpool play at least for the second half of the season.
