As part of the fun surrounding our 50th anniversary, Golfweek has been walking down Memory Lane with a number of former employees who helped make the brand what it is today.

We continue the series with a writer who specialized in the grassroots of the magazine, Mike Bailey.

When did you work at Golfweek?

2001-2007

What was your Golfweek title, and give us a brief description of what you did.

Senior writer. I worked on Super News, covering the turf grass industry.

What’s your current title and company?

Freelancer. I do work for Golf Monthly, Golflink.com, Golfpass, etc.

What’s the one moment you’re proudest of while working with Golfweek?

I went to Southern California and covered the aftermath of the wildfires (some were still going): the damage, the rebuilds, and how golf courses served as firebreaks.

What’s the ‘hair-on-fire’ moment you remember most vividly?

When my editor, Mike Boslet, tore into me on a feature I did on Jerry Pate and had me completely rewrite it. The second version turned out to be one of the better pieces I’ve written in my career.

What’s your favorite golf course you’ve played and why?

This is always so difficult for me to answer, but I’m going to go with Pebble Beach. It doesn’t get any better than holes 5-10, the 14th, and the 17th and 18th. I’ve gotten to play there four times, and I’m always excited about playing it. I hope I have at least one more round there in my lifetime.

(Editor’s note: We appreciate all the former employees who have contributed time and effort to this feature. The golf journalism community is a small one and we’re proud of the achievements of all our former colleagues.)
