SAN DIEGO — Just days after wondering if he would even be in the field at all, Joel Dahmen fired three eagles and rocketed up the leaderboard into a tie for third place at the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open on Friday at famous Torrey Pines.

The 38-year-old Clarkston native no longer holds a full PGA Tour card and was originally on the alternate list for the event.

Fast forward to the weekend and the 10th-year PGA pro is among the leaders at one of golf’s most prestigious courses.

“Just the unknown,” Dahmen said Friday, per GolfDigest. “For 10 years out here, I’ve kind of got to pick my schedule mostly, and it’s been great. And I would say there’s a part in mid-December where I wasn’t doing a lot and hanging out with the family, and at times you’d be like, ‘I wonder if I’m only gonna get into 12, 15 events.’”

Dahmen shot a 9-under 63 in Friday’s second round, highlighted by eagles on Nos. 10, 5 and 9 on the North Course. He also had four birdies and one bogey and sits at 11 under overall.

Add in his eagle in the first round Thursday and Dahmen becomes the first player to make four eagles in a week at this event since 1983.

His spectacular day included a 40-foot putt on No. 10 — his first hole of the day — and a 12-footer on his closing No. 9.

“I expected to play well, but you never expect to make three eagles,” Dahmen said with his signature grin.

Justin Rose breaks a record, leads tourney

Justin Rose scored even better on the notorious South course than he did on the North, and the proof is in the tournament record book. He broke his own 36-hole record by two shots at Torrey Pines to build a four-shot lead.
