The club, in Ryedown Lane, West Wellow, has been shortlisted for the Respect in Golf Award at the 2026 England Golf Awards, recognising a year of meaningful progress in inclusivity, accessibility and modern governance.

In 2025, the club undertook a full constitutional review, resulting in the introduction of equal male and female club captains — a landmark step towards gender equality in golf leadership.

This change has been warmly embraced by members and reflects Wellow’s commitment to ensuring that everyone feels represented at the highest level of club life.

Wellow also champions intergenerational and cross‑sectional participation, ensuring juniors, seniors, women and men all have an equal voice in events and decision‑making.

With more than 800 members, the club’s mixed competitions and social gatherings consistently draw strong, diverse participation.

Accessibility is another key focus.

Recognising that a challenging carry over conservation land was excluding disabled and elderly golfers, the club is actively exploring a redesign to ensure all members can enjoy the full course.

This proactive approach demonstrates Wellow’s belief that golf should be playable — and enjoyable — for everyone, regardless of age or physical ability.

Members have already expressed how empowering it is to see equal captaincy and how reassuring it is to know that course accessibility is being addressed.

Visitors and officials alike note the club’s warm, inclusive culture the moment they walk through the door.

Looking ahead, Wellow plans to expand leadership mentoring, enhance social golf opportunities, and continue reviewing policies and facilities to meet the evolving needs of its community.
