He knew he had no chance of getting up and down in 2, and would have a better chance of getting up and down in 3 if his next shot was from a good lie in the bunker. The shot he played guaranteed that! The commentators should’ve been complimentary for his brilliant course management, instead of implying he was an idiot!

When a commentator says "I have no clue what he was trying to do there" then that is a clue to switch to another game where the commentators do have a clue.
This made zero sense…. he could have atleast tried to get it out onto the green, and worse case scenario hes still in the bunker and has a better lie lmao, this was a brainless play

Did no one notice that he's using a left-handed club? Why would a right-handder even carry a lefty club in his bag?
Technical difficulties here.
While the camera is showing what WE are seeing (obviously) the announcers are speaking to an event happening on a different hole where a spectator has mounted his wife/girlfriend just yards from the green.
If you listen to the announcers again with this understanding it will all make sense.

Given a buried lie like that…you can turn the club face to the left so the toe is aimed at the flag.
Then you just swing and plop it right behind the ball…the trick is to hold the club so lightly it almost flies out of your hands.
The club head will fly open and the ball will pop out and flutter on the green easy peasy
that how you hit a fried egg….

Think he was trying to top spin and ramp it up bunker face. Basically impossible from a plug in soft sand, Creative idea though. Wasn’t that far of a carry, I think a chunk/muscle PW was the move.
People in the comments are wrong. That’s a legit technique for a plugged lie. He just didn’t execute.
