A relaxing Sunday round turned dangerous in Calamba, Laguna, when a female golfer was attacked by a swarm of bees, prompting her to warn fellow players to stay alert on the course.
Maria Tracy Piamonte shared on Sunday, January 4, that she, her sister Karina Navela, her nephew Adriel Navela, and their caddie were attacked by bees at the Ayala Greenfield Golf and Leisure Club.
“We were at the at the wrong place at the wrong time because apparently, some eagle — not birdie! — disturbed the beehive!” she shared on Facebook.
“The bees continued to swarm around us, so we panicked, and as we tried to get away, our golf cart crashed due to a miscalculated maneuver,” Piamonte added.
“We ended up with facial bruising, swollen lips, and multiple body bruises and bee sting! After our incident, several groups behind us were also attacked; some chose to stop [playing], while others continued, even with bees already inside their clothes!” she continued.
The golfer then warned fellow players to be cautious while playing in the area, adding that the incident occurred on Hole 11.
“Stay alert in this area and do not hesitate to stop play if this happens. No round is worth risking injury. To fellow golfers who stopped and assisted us until we were safe, thank you and God bless you! Let’s all look out for one another on the course,” Piamonte said.
In the comments section, Piamonte said she will start bringing Baygon and an antihistamine following the incident.
Baygon is an insecticide brand, while an antihistamine is a type of medicine that treats allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes.
Reports said the bee attack also affected golfers playing on the 10th and 12th holes, in addition to the 11th hole where Piamonte was.
For safety, the club eventually recalled everyone from the course.
Meanwhile, the Ayala Greenfield Golf and Leisure Club is an 18-hole golf course nestled at the foot of Mount Makiling.
It was designed by world-renowned golf architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. and is said to offer panoramic views of Laguna de Bay and the Tagaytay Ridge.
