Tiger Woods’ Back Surgery Explained by a Spine Surgeon

Tiger Woods is back in the headlines — this time for his spine surgery. I’m Dr. Antonio Webb, an orthopedic spine surgeon here in San Antonio, and I’m breaking down exactly what procedure he had, why it’s done, and what it means for recovery and performance.

This isn’t just for athletes — this same surgery helps everyday people get their lives back from chronic back pain.

Watch till the end to understand the real difference between disc replacement vs spinal fusion — and why motion matters.

  1. He was fused at L5-S1, so this was predictable, given the amount of twisting he does golfing. His ADR was next level up.

  2. Nice, interested to see how he plays next year. My two discs are flat from s1 up so hoping I can get a two level some day when the tech is good enough.

  3. What's the average cost for a disc replacement? Does insurance typically cover it, or is it usually considered elective?

  4. My orthopedic surgeon just spoke to me about ALIF surgery I’m just curious why didn’t he mention this surgery to me? Is it insurance reasons my L5 S one disc is the issue.

  5. On the one hand, I used to love endurance sports (jogging, biking, aerobics), on the other hand I did no sports for longer stretches of time (months..) and nothing to strengthen my core. 😅 Frankly, I wouldn't know if I dared (longterm risks..) an ADR procedure (broadbased disc bulge at l5s1..) but I am glad there are skilled surgeons like Dr. Webb out there who perform this challenging surgery with confidence and evolving expertise that he is sharing with us to follow with continuous enthusiasm.

Procedures such as ADR.. It's admittedly not life-saving, but definitely life-changing, particularly for someone who wants to stay active (mid-30s with back pain is no easy feat). Kudos to the daily dedication that surgeons such as you and the surgical team demonstrate every day. Truly a role model.

Also, your clip to teach how to read an MRI has been incredibly helpful.

Since I am located in Germany, I might never have the honor to meet in person but I felt the appreciative words appropriate, as I have been following the channel for some time.

Kudus to you and have a delightful holiday season with your fam.
