Alex Ferguson was ridiculous for not signing Van Der Sar straight after Schmeichel left. Why he chose to sign Bosnich to replace him is bizarre. It's also mind boggling how he persisted with Barthez, Tim Howard and Roy Carroll for so long after. Took him 5 years to pull his finger out and sign the guy.
Great manager Alex Ferguson but what he was thinking with that goalkeeper situation to this day remains a mystery.
Dutch players always did well in United. From Big Pete to Ruud to Edwin
This is so so so true. Edwin van der Sar truly was the missing link. Manchester United had a great attack (Rooney, Van Nistelrooy), great midfield (Giggs, Scholes, Keane, CR7), great defence (Neville, Ferdinand, Vidic).
But not a giant sensible goalkeeper who could make saves. Not a "sweeper keeper", not the goalkeeper who starts attacks. Just the guy who makes saves.
Then big Edwin van der Sar came along and did things that no other goalkeeper in the world could do.
Truly Sir Alex's greatest signing of the 2000s.
