EAST TAWAS – Young golfers will have their chance to participate in a junior golf program at Bogey’s Indoor Golf in downtown East Tawas. The eight week program begins Jan. 5-6 and there are still spots available, according to Paul Vainer, owner of Bogeys and Tawas’ varsity girls and boys golf coach.

“Selfishly, I love running these camps to help my future varsity golfers get an early start,” Vainer said. “These camps have directly led to the development of some of our best players. The way we run these camps, creates excitement and fun. It is my job as the varsity golf coach in a small town to get kids to associate fun with golf. If the kids are having fun they are going to keep playing. If they keep playing, especially with their friends, they’re going to get better.”

Vainer along with varsity assistant coach Jim Boerger will run the camp for eight weeks. They will host four sessions each week, with two on Monday and two on Tuesday. New golfers will have a time slot of either 3:30 p.m. on Mondays or 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, while more advanced golfers will be either 5 p.m. Mondays or 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays. The program is open to boys and girls ages eight and older.

“It is one hour per week and a maximum of four kids per coach,” Vainer said. “Our program combines both skilled development and competition. Every other week the kids will be competing against themselves and others with the new skills they recently learned. We have had tremendous success with this program in the past with dozens and dozens of kids over the last few years.

“One tweak that I did this year that I have not done previously as we have separated our true beginner golfers with those who have been to my camp before these advanced junior golfers have been through the basics, often several times, and will benefit from a more robust program. This allows us to properly cater to any golfer from eight years old through high school.”

Golfers will have the opportunity to learn the game from the varsity coaches on the state-of-the-art golf simulators. Cost is $160 per player to cover the eight weeks, with an addition cost of $100 per additional sibling.

“There is limited availability due to the low coach to player ratio, so reach out before we fill up,” Vainer said. “Call us or stop by our downtown East Tawas location to sign up or for more details.”
