Practice is important to all of them, except cheating. Cheating is the one for people who don’t practice.

For a hack, I do okay with GIR. If I could putt, I would have scores to be proud of.

im currently so lost in my swing who knows. i used to trust my irons. now who do i trust. i developed a shank at least once a round. i can hit my driver now but who cares, it will let me down when i need it most. i was putting lights out and thats over. i was working down to breaking 80 (with multiple 9s in the 30s) and now im back to hoping to break 90 on a GOOD day. If you can’t putt, you can’t score. But if you can’t drive, you can’t play.

Driving. I think for an amateur if you can carry a ball 240-250 with reasonable accuracy then move on to practicing from inside 100 all day.
When I struggle off the tee it feels like I’m not even playing golf.

Strokes gained statistics have proven that drive for show Putt for dough is completely wrong. Jon Sherman goes into it in detail in his book. Shows strokes gained on different length putts based on handicap vs tee shots and distance from hole with different handicaps.

I am the worst putter in the universe. not great at the rest but can get around well enough but could probably shave 5-10 per round just from not being so fucking terrible at putting and averaging over 2 per hole.

You can’t putt bad and score good… i can be shitty off the tee but putt well and still have a decent round.

After decades of playing, I have finally found a fundamentally sound swing that feels natural. As a result, I am playing the most consistent tee-to-green golf of my life. I’m not making near enough putts, but I still am enjoying my game so much more these last couple of months. So, a solid, repeatable swing is my answer.

Finishing a hole with the same ball I tee’d off with is what I consider a success.

Limit your mistakes and play within yourself. If you can’t drive, hit woods. If your ball striking sucks, aim for the middle of the green. If your short game stinks, aim for a safe miss. Etc

Driving if done well sets you up with a huge advantage and if done at least OK allows you chances to do well at other things. If you suck at it then other stuff doesn’t matter cuz you’re chipping for par and putting for bogey / double all day. The statistics show it, all the guys at the top of the leaderboard week in week out bomb it for a reason. It’s great to get hot with the putter but there’s just not a big sustainable advantage there.
You put a PGA pro and a 20 handicap on the green from 20 feet and the yes the pro is a lot better. But put them both on the tee box and they’re miles apart.

it’s pretty telling that the creator of this didn’t even consider strategy as the name of the game, because it’s one of, if not the most important part. top players agonize over it, it’s absolutely critical with every single shot, and it’s the one thing that EVERYONE could do better without any practice at all, and reap huge rewards from, yet most don’t even consider it as necessary (like the person who made this)

Driving…hole becomes so much easier if you consistently can get 70% of the hole finished in one stroke.
