Known as pencil or Sunday bags, there is no doubt that the ultra lightweight golf bag is on trend.

Golfers are using them for a variety of reasons. Though they can’t carry a full set, many players of all ages are finding them so useful when it’s time for a practice or a visit to the range or swing studio.

With climate change producing successive long wet winters in the UK they are increasingly finding a use for play in general, particularly at clubs that are reluctantly forced to introduce trolley bans to protect the course over winter.

There are several on the market, including a new one from a brand new golf products company.

Would you use this lightweight golf bag?

The Rangr bag from Flushd is so named as it is ideal for taking a few clubs out for a practice. But it fits the bill as an ideal bag for the other uses. It suits me perfectly, as due to failing hips I’m unable to carry a standard bag around a golf course.

And bizarrely, as many of us will know, few is often more when it comes to the number of clubs you take out with you. There are plenty of anecdotes of players scoring more points in a three club competition than they normally manage with a full set of 14, so the space limitations of a pencil bag is unlikely to spoil your round.

Rangr Golf Bag

The Rangr bag is a lightweight bag weighing just 2.5 lbs. It’s compact yet spacious enough to carry waterproofs and balls in its four pockets. The three way top divider is graphite friendly and I’ve managed to stuff up to six clubs into it, including a driver and my mallet putter.

Pencil bags in the past didn’t typically feature stands, meaning they often got wet from putting them on the ground in winter. Not pleasant at all when you picked them up and slung them across your back.

The Rangr bag doesn’t have this problem thanks to its stand and useful grab handle. It also features a double shoulder strap to spread its light load across your back.

There are ten colours and there is even a built in phone holder to allow golfers to video their swing. On test this function worked surprisingly well, although the camera height was a little lower than ideal.

Should you buy the Flushd Rangr golf bag?

I find this an extremely versatile new addition to my kit and I’m very pleased with it. My only quibble is that it could do with a more robust base, perhaps made of rubber to help keep it clean and dry.

Flushd is a new golf brand created in 2025 to promote boldly designed premium products.
