Toby Harbeck has lots of titles at the Benjamin School, including golf coach and English teacher. He also coaches Tiger Woods’ son, Charlie — and it means that the PGA Tour legend doesn’t get to call the shots.
Harbeck is no stranger to coaching famous people’s kids, including the sons of Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, and Tony Jacklin. He now sits amongst Charlie Woods while President Donald Trump’s granddaughter, Kai, plays for the women’s team.
Harbeck says that since Charlie is playing for him, Tiger knows where he stands during the rounds.
“Every state championship we’ve been to with Charlie, he’s been there for us,” Harbeck told the Daily Mail of Tiger Woods. The 15-time major winner showed up to a match during his son’s freshman year. “I could tell he was a little jittery,” recalled the coach. “He came up to me on the second or third hole [and asked]: ‘Coach, what can I do… I don’t want to break any rules or get us disqualified.”

The only rule was that Tiger couldn’t be walking the middle of the fairway with his son.
“We treat Tiger as dad… like all my other nine players’ [parents],” said Harbeck. “We don’t give him any special privileges.”
As for Charlie, Harbeck says that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree with his talent.
“He’s grown up a lot in three years and I think he’s going to be even better next year,” he said. ”He wants to be perfect. And that doesn’t fall far from the tree.”
Charlie Woods won first AJGA title this year
Charlie will return next season to the Benjamin School as one of the captains on the team. Woods earned his first AJGA title in May and finished tied-ninth at the Junior PGA Championship.
“I can tell immediately when he hits the shot… whether it’s good or bad,” said Harbeck. “I can’t describe it to you. But I can always tell.”
Just recently, Harbeck and the team won their fifth state championship, the second in three years with Woods on the team, and Harbeck says Tiger has been there every step of the way.

“He’s very kind to my kids and very funny. There’s a wall that goes up and I’m on the other side of that wall, which is great,” said Harbeck.
“It’s so unfair to compare,” Harbeck said of Charlie Woods. “But? ‘He’s got all the tools… he is a lot more driven than a lot of kids I’ve seen.”
