Southport-born golf star Tommy Fleetwood has had a year to remember. The 34-year-old starred at a tense Ryder Cup in New York and won two titles in 2025.

This season, Fleetwood clinched 12 top-20 finishes on the PGA Tour. He also secured his long-awaited first victory with the Tour Championship title in August.

That win saw him bag a staggering £8 million in prize money alone. Fleetwood’s dream year also saw him clinch the DP World India Championship victory, while he was also nominated for the PGA Tour Player of the Year trophy, ultimately losing out to world no. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

Nevertheless, Fleetwood’s total prize money for the 2025 season is estimated to be approximately £17.6million. Here, we take a closer look at the golf icon’s headline-grabbing 2025.

Ryder Cup heroics

Fleetwood was the shining light of this year’s Ryder Cup. The 34-year-old served as a talisman for his team as he spearheaded their victory during a drama-filled weekend in New York.

As the recipient of the Nicklaus-Jacklin Award, an accolade handed out to those who embody the spirit of the Ryder Cup, Fleetwood demonstrated that he’s one of the finest players in the game right now.

Fleetwood wrapped up the Ryder Cup with a 4–1–0 record, after contributing four points to Europe’s cause. Alongside Rory McIlroy, Fleetwood scored victories over Collin Morikawa and Harris English. Fleetwood and Justin Rose also secured two fourball wins, including a three and two victory over Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau.

Wife targeted

Tommy’s wife, Clare, was targeted by hecklers during Europe’s Ryder Cup victory. The taunts came during Fleetwood’s victory over DeChambeau and Ben Griffin at Bethpage Black.

As Fleetwood stepped up to the first tee, one American fan could be heard shouting: “Your wife looks like my grandmother”. This was believed to be a reference to the 23-year age gap between Tommy, 34, and Clare, 57.

The couple, who married in 2017, have spoken in the past about public scrutiny of their relationship. The pair have a son together, and parent two children from Clare’s previous relationship. Clare also works with Tommy.

Speaking on how his wife became his manager once they had struck up a romance, Fleetwood told The Times: “We planned to keep our life and our work separate, for me to find another agent.

“But it became more apparent I wasn’t going to find anybody I’d trust as much because, after all, Clare is a very, very, very good agent by trade; it wasn’t like she was my wife just helping the family out.”

Facing criticism

Fleetwood narrowly missed out to Aaron Rai at the Abu Dhabi Championship, with both players tied at 25-under heading into a playoff.

However, moments before the tense finale, Fleetwood kept Rai waiting at the 18th tee, prompting criticism from TV commentator and former European tour professional Andrew Coltart.

“This is what I don’t like,” said Coltart. “To me, they’ve both got to arrive at the tee at the same time. I don’t like that. That gives the person who arrives on the tee last an advantage.” Fellow commentator David Howell responded: “I know what you mean, the right thing to do would be to arrive together.”

Wayne Riley, a former professional golfer and television analyst, then interjected: “Tommy is just slowing it all down, a little gamesmanship, clever. Making him wait, stew.”

Maiden title success

Fleetwood ended his wait for a PGA Tour title after holding off Patrick Cantlay, Russell Henley and Scheffler to win the Tour Championship in August. His win ended a run of 30 top-fives and a string of near-misses in recent years.

Fleetwood eventually finished 18-under at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia. Fleetwood had a strong week going into the final round after hitting 64, 63 and 67 in the first 54 holes.

Cantlay, Henley and Scheffler all mounted a stern challenge to the final round leader, but Fleetwood kept their offensive at bay. A par on the last capped an unforgettable weekend in style for Fleetwood as he was named the 2025 FedEx Cup champion.

Goals for 2026

Fleetwood’s victory at the DP World India Championship in October was his eighth DP World Tour title and first since January 2024. After a stunning 2025, he revealed after the win in New Delhi that he now has his sights set on 2026.

“It [winning a Green Jacket] would be nice,” Fleetwood said, referring to his long wait for a Major victory. “I imagine those things all the time; it’s just about making it a reality. That’s something we’ll look at. When the season finishes, you look at sort of targets and goals for the following season.

“I still have two tournaments to go. I still have things that I want to complete in those two tournaments that I’ll strive for, and then when eventually we get that done with, we’ll look towards 2026 and see what we can do.”
